| 1After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death. | 1After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. |
| 2But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters, | 2Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. |
| 3and Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles! | 3His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. |
| 4You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!” | 4For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. |
| 5For even his brothers didn’t believe in him. | 5For neither did his brethren believe in him. |
| 6Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime. | 6Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. |
| 7 The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil. | 7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. |
| 8 You go on. I’m not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come.” | 8Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. |
| 9After saying these things, Jesus remained in Galilee. Jesus Teaches Openly at the Temple | 9When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee. |
| 10But after his brothers left for the festival, Jesus also went, though secretly, staying out of public view. | 10But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. |
| 11The Jewish leaders tried to find him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him. | 11Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he? |
| 12There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some argued, “He’s a good man,” but others said, “He’s nothing but a fraud who deceives the people.” | 12And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. |
| 13But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public, for they were afraid of getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders. | 13Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews. |
| 14Then, midway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began to teach. | 14Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. |
| 15The people were surprised when they heard him. “How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked. | 15And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? |
| 16So Jesus told them, “My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me. | 16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. |
| 17 Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own. | 17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. |
| 18 Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies. | 18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. |
| 19 Moses gave you the law, but none of you obeys it! In fact, you are trying to kill me.” | 19Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? |
| 20The crowd replied, “You’re demon possessed! Who’s trying to kill you?” | 20The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? |
| 21Jesus replied, “I did one miracle on the Sabbath, and you were amazed. | 21Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. |
| 22 But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses’ law of circumcision. (Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the patriarchs, long before the law of Moses.) | 22Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. |
| 23 For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath? | 23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? |
| 24 Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” Is Jesus the Messiah? | 24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. |
| 25Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each other, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? | 25Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? |
| 26But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah? | 26But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? |
| 27But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from.” | 27Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. |
| 28While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I’m not here on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don’t know him. | 28Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. |
| 29 But I know him because I come from him, and he sent me to you.” | 29But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. |
| 30Then the leaders tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. | 30Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. |
| 31Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. “After all,” they said, “would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?” | 31And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done? |
| 32When the Pharisees heard that the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading priests sent Temple guards to arrest Jesus. | 32The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. |
| 33But Jesus told them, “I will be with you only a little longer. Then I will return to the one who sent me. | 33Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. |
| 34 You will search for me but not find me. And you cannot go where I am going.” | 34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. |
| 35The Jewish leaders were puzzled by this statement. “Where is he planning to go?” they asked. “Is he thinking of leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands? Maybe he will even teach the Greeks! | 35Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? |
| 36What does he mean when he says, ‘You will search for me but not find me,’ and ‘You cannot go where I am going’?” Jesus Promises Living Water | 36What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come? |
| 37On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! | 37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. |
| 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” | 38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. |
| 39(When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.) Division and Unbelief | 39(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) |
| 40When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared, “Surely this man is the Prophet we’ve been expecting.” | 40Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. |
| 41Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others said, “But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee? | 41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? |
| 42For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.” | 42Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? |
| 43So the crowd was divided about him. | 43So there was a division among the people because of him. |
| 44Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him. | 44And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. |
| 45When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” | 45Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? |
| 46“We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded. | 46The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. |
| 47“Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked. | 47Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? |
| 48“Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him? | 48Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? |
| 49This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!” | 49But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. |
| 50Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, spoke up. | 50Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) |
| 51“Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?” he asked. | 51Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? |
| 52They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself—no prophet ever comes from Galilee!” ---------- [ The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7:53–8:11. ] | 52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. |
| 53Then the meeting broke up, and everybody went home. | 53And every man went unto his own house. |
