Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.1Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his time had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end.
And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,2The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, that he should betray Jesus.
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,3Because Jesus knew that the Father had handed all things over to him, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.4he got up from the meal, removed his outer clothes, took a towel and tied it around himself.
After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.5He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.
Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”6Then he came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”7Jesus replied, "You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things."
Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”8Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me."
Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”9Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!"
Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”10Jesus replied, "The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not every one of you."
For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”11(For Jesus knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, "Not every one of you is clean.")
So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?12So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you?
You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.13You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and do so correctly, for that is what I am.
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.15For I have given you an example--you should do just as I have done for you.
Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.16I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.17If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
“I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’18"What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, 'The one who eats my bread has turned against me.'
Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.19I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am he.
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”20I tell you the solemn truth, whoever accepts the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."
When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.”21When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressed in spirit, and testified, "I tell you the solemn truth, one of you will betray me."
Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.22The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexed to know which of them he was talking about.
Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.23One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was at the table to the right of Jesus in a place of honor.
Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.24So Simon Peter gestured to this disciple to ask Jesus who it was he was referring to.
Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”25Then the disciple whom Jesus loved leaned back against Jesus' chest and asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.26Jesus replied, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish." Then he dipped the piece of bread in the dish and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon's son.
Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”27And after Judas took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are about to do, do quickly."
But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him.28(Now none of those present at the table understood why Jesus said this to Judas.
For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.29Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.)
Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.30Judas took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.)
So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.31When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.
Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.33Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me, and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders, 'Where I am going you cannot come,' now I tell you the same.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.34"I give you a new commandment--to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”35Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples--if you have love for one another."
Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.”36Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later."
Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.”37Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!"
Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!
