New King James Version | Berean Study Bible |
Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. | 1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. |
There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. | 2So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him. |
Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. | 3Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. |
But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, | 4But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked, |
“Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” | 5“Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” |
This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. | 6Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it. |
But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. | 7“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial. |
For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.” | 8The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.” |
Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. | 9Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was there. And they came not only because of Him, but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. |
But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, | 10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, |
because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. | 11for on account of him many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus. |
The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, | 12The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. |
took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ The King of Israel!” | 13They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!” |
Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: | 14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written: |
“Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.” | 15“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion. See, your King is coming, seated on the colt of a donkey.” |
His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. | 16At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him. |
Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. | 17Meanwhile, many people continued to testify that they had been with Jesus when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead. |
For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. | 18That is also why the crowd went out to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign. |
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!” | 19Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!” |
Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. | 20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. |
Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” | 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” |
Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus. | 22Philip relayed this appeal to Andrew, and both of them went and told Jesus. |
But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. | 23But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. |
Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. | 24Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. |
He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. | 25Whoever loves his life will lose it, but whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. |
If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. | 26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, My servant will be as well. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. |
“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. | 27Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour. |
Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” | 28Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” |
Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” | 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him. |
Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. | 30In response, Jesus said, “This voice was not for My benefit, but yours. |
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. | 31Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out. |
And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” | 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.” |
This He said, signifying by what death He would die. | 33He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die. |
The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” | 34The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever. So how can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” |
Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. | 35Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. |
While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them. | 36While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” After Jesus had spoken these things, He went away and was hidden from them. |
But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, | 37Although Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still did not believe in Him. |
that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” | 38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” |
Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: | 39For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says: |
“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.” | 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they cannot see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.” |
These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him. | 41Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about Him. |
Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; | 42Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue. |
for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. | 43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God. |
Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. | 44Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me. |
And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. | 45And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me. |
I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. | 46I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness. |
And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. | 47As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world. |
He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him— the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. | 48There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. |
For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. | 49I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it. |
And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” | 50And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.” |
