1They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes.

1So they came to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes.

2When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him,

2Just as Jesus was getting out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came from the tombs and met him.

3and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain;

3He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.

4because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.

4For his hands and feet had often been bound with chains and shackles, but he had torn the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him.

5Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones.

5Each night and every day among the tombs and in the mountains, he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

6Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;

6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him.

7and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!"

7Then he cried out with a loud voice, "Leave me alone, Jesus, Son of the Most High God! I implore you by God--do not torment me!"

8For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"

8(For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of that man, you unclean spirit!")

9And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many."

9Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "My name is Legion, for we are many."

10And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country.

10He begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of the region.

11Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain.

11There on the hillside, a great herd of pigs was feeding.

12The demons implored Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them."

12And the demonic spirits begged him, "Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them."

13Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.

13Jesus gave them permission. So the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. Then the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake, and about two thousand were drowned in the lake.

14Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened.

14Now the herdsmen ran off and spread the news in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.

15They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened.

15They came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind--the one who had the "Legion"--and they were afraid.

16Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine.

16Those who had seen what had happened to the demon-possessed man reported it, and they also told about the pigs.

17And they began to implore Him to leave their region.

17Then they asked Jesus to leave their region.

18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him.

19And He did not let him, but He said to him, "Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you."

19But Jesus did not permit him to do so. Instead, he said to him, "Go to your home and to your people and tell them what the Lord has done for you, that he had mercy on you."

20And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.

21When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore.

22One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet

22Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came up, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.

23and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live."

23He asked him urgently, "My little daughter is near death. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be healed and live."

24And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.

24Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around him.

25A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years,

25Now a woman was there who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years.

26and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse--

26She had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet instead of getting better, she grew worse.

27after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.

27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,

28For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well."

28for she kept saying, "If only I touch his clothes, I will be healed."

29Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

29At once the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.

30Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?"

30Jesus knew at once that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?"

31And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"

32And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.

32But he looked around to see who had done it.

33But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.

34And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction."

35While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?"

35While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler's house saying, "Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?"

36But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe."

36But Jesus, paying no attention to what was said, told the synagogue ruler, "Do not be afraid; just believe."

37And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James.

37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.

38They came to the house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing.

38They came to the house of the synagogue ruler where he saw noisy confusion and people weeping and wailing loudly.

39And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep."

39When he entered he said to them, "Why are you distressed and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."

40They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was.

40And they began making fun of him. But he put them all outside and he took the child's father and mother and his own companions and went into the room where the child was.

41Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").

41Then, gently taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up."

42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.

42The girl got up at once and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). They were completely astonished at this.

43And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.

43He strictly ordered that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
