And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. | 1As Jesus left the Temple and was walking away, his disciples came up to him to point out to him the Temple buildings. |
And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. | 2But he told them, "You see all these things, don't you? I tell all of you with certainty, there isn't a single stone here that will be left standing on top of another. They will all be torn down." |
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? | 3While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately and said, "Tell us, when will these things take place, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" |
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. | 4Jesus answered them, "See to it that no one deceives you, |
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. | 5because many will come in my name and say, 'I'm the Messiah,' and they will deceive many people. |
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. | 6You'll hear of wars and rumors of wars. See to it that you aren't alarmed. These things must take place, but the end hasn't come yet, |
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. | 7because nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. |
All these are the beginning of sorrows. | 8But all these things are only the beginning of the birth pains." |
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. | 9"Then they'll hand you over to suffer and will kill you, and you'll be hated by all the nations because of my name. |
And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. | 10Then many people will fall away, will betray one another, and will hate one another. |
And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. | 11Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people, |
And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. | 12and because lawlessness will increase, the love of many people will grow cold. |
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. | 13But the person who endures to the end will be saved. |
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. | 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." |
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) | 15"So when you see the destructive desecration, mentioned by the prophet Daniel, standing in the Holy Place (let the reader take note), |
Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: | 16then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. |
Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: | 17Anyone who's on the housetop must not come down to get what is in his house, |
Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. | 18and anyone who's in the field must not turn back to get his coat. |
And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! | 19"How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or who are nursing babies in those days! |
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: | 20Pray that it may not be in winter or on a Sabbath when you flee, |
For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. | 21because at that time there will be great suffering, the kind that hasn't happened from the beginning of the world until now and certainly won't ever happen again. |
And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. | 22If those days hadn't been limited, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be limited. |
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. | 23"At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here's the Messiah!' or 'There he is!', don't believe it, |
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. | 24because false messiahs and false prophets will appear and display great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. |
Behold, I have told you before. | 25Remember, I've told you this beforehand. |
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. | 26So if they say to you, 'Look! He's in the wilderness,' don't go out looking for him. And if they say, 'Look! He's in the storeroom,' don't believe it, |
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. | 27because just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. |
For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. | 28Wherever there's a corpse, there the vultures will gather. |
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: | 29"Immediately after the troubles of those days, 'The sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken loose.' |
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. | 30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all 'the tribes of the land will mourn' when they see 'the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven' with power and great glory. |
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. | 31He'll send out his angels with a loud trumpet blast, and they'll gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to another." |
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: | 32"Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches become tender and it produces leaves, you know that summer is near. |
So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. | 33In the same way, when you see all these things, you'll know that the Son of Man is near, right at the door. |
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. | 34I tell all of you with certainty, this generation won't disappear until these things happen. |
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. | 35Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear." |
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. | 36"No one knows when that day or hour will come —not the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father, |
But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. | 37because just as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. |
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, | 38In those days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage right up to the day when Noah went into the ark. |
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. | 39They were unaware of what was happening until the flood came and swept all of them away. That's how it will be when the Son of Man comes. |
Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. | 40At that time, two people will be in the field. One will be taken, and one will be left behind. |
Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. | 41Two women will be grinding grain at the mill. One will be taken, and one will be left behind. |
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. | 42"So keep on watching, because you don't know on what day your Lord is coming. |
But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. | 43But be sure of this: if the owner of the house had known when during the night the thief would be coming, he would have stayed awake and not allowed his house to be broken into. |
Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. | 44So you, too, must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you are not expecting him." |
Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? | 45"Who, then, is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has put in charge of his household to give the others their food at the right time? |
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. | 46How blessed is that servant whom his master finds doing this when he comes! |
Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. | 47I tell all of you with certainty, he will put him in charge of all his property. |
But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; | 48"But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master has been delayed,' |
And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; | 49and begins to beat his fellow servants and eat and drink with the drunks, |
The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, | 50that servant's master will come on a day when he doesn't expect him and at an hour that he doesn't know. |
And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. | 51Then his master will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." |
