"I have told you this to keep you from falling away. | 1These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. |
You'll be thrown out of the synagogues. Yes, a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he's serving God. | 2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. |
They'll do this because they haven't known the Father or me. | 3And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. |
But I've told you this, so that when the time comes you'll remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you this in the beginning, because I was still with you." | 4But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. |
"But now I am going to the one who sent me. Yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' | 5But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? |
But because I have told you this, sorrow has filled your hearts. | 6But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. |
However, I'm telling you the truth. It's for your advantage that I'm going away, because if I don't go away, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. | 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. |
When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment— | 8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: |
of sin, because they don't believe in me; | 9Of sin, because they believe not on me; |
of righteousness, because I'm going to the Father and you will no longer see me; | 10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; |
and of judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. | 11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. |
"I still have a lot to say to you, but you cannot bear it now. | 12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. |
Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he'll guide you into all truth. He won't speak on his own accord, but he'll speak whatever he hears and will declare to you the things that are to come. | 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. |
He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. | 14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. |
All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said, 'He will take what is mine and declare it to you.' | 15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. |
In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again." | 16A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. |
At this point, some of his disciples asked each other, "What does he mean by telling us, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again,' and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" | 17Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? |
They kept saying, "What is this 'in a little while' that he keeps talking about? We don't know what he means." | 18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. |
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him a question, so he asked them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again'? | 19Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? |
Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you'll cry and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You'll be deeply distressed, but your pain will turn into joy. | 20Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. |
When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her time has come. Yet when she has given birth to her child, she doesn't remember the agony anymore because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. | 21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. |
Now you are having pain. But I'll see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. | 22And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. |
On that day, you won't ask me for anything. Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give it to you. | 23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. |
So far you haven't asked for anything in my name. Keep asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete." | 24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. |
"I have said these things to you in figurative language. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly about the Father. | 25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. |
At that time, you will make your requests in my name, so that I will have no need to ask the Father on your behalf, | 26At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: |
because the Father himself loves you, and because you have loved me and believed that I came from God. | 27For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. |
I left the Father and came into the world. Now I'm leaving the world and going back to the Father." | 28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. |
Jesus' disciples said, "Well, now you're speaking plainly and not using figurative language. | 29His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. |
Now we know that you know everything and don't need to have anyone ask you any questions. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God." | 30Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. |
Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? | 31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? |
Listen, the time is coming, indeed it has already come, when you will be scattered, each of you to his own home, and you will leave me all by myself. Yet I'm not alone, because the Father is with me. | 32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. |
I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you'll have trouble, but be courageous—I've overcome the world!" | 33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. |
