They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. | 1So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes. |
And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. | 2When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. |
He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, | 3This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. |
for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. | 4Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. |
Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. | 5Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones. |
And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. | 6When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. |
And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” | 7With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!” |
For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” | 8For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.” |
And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” | 9Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” |
And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. | 10Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. |
Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, | 11There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. |
and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” | 12“Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.” |
So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. | 13So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. |
The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. | 14The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. |
And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. | 15A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. |
And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. | 16Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. |
And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. | 17And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone. |
As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. | 18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. |
And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” | 19But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” |
And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. | 20So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them. Jesus Heals in Response to Faith |
And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. | 21Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. |
Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet | 22Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, |
and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” | 23pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” |
And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. | 24Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. |
And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, | 25A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. |
and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. | 26She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. |
She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. | 27She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. |
For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” | 28For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” |
And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. | 29Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. |
And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” | 30Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” |
And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” | 31His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” |
And he looked around to see who had done it. | 32But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. |
But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. | 33Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. |
And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” | 34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” |
While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” | 35While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” |
But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” | 36But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” |
And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. | 37Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James). |
They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. | 38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. |
And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” | 39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” |
And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. | 40The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. |
Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” | 41Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” |
And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. | 42And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. |
And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. | 43Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat. |
