I love you, O LORD, my strength. | 1For the music director; by the LORD's servant David, who sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. He said: "I love you, LORD, my source of strength! |
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. | 2The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge. |
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. | 3I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. |
The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; | 4The waves of death engulfed me, the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. |
the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. | 5The ropes of Sheol tightened around me, the snares of death trapped me. |
In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. | 6In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried out to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. |
Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry. | 7The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry. |
Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. | 8Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. |
He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. | 9He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. |
He rode on a cherub and flew; he came swiftly on the wings of the wind. | 10He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him, thick clouds dark with water. | 11He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. |
Out of the brightness before him hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds. | 12From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals. |
The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire. | 13The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted. |
And he sent out his arrows and scattered them; he flashed forth lightnings and routed them. | 14He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them. |
Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils. | 15The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose. |
He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. | 16He reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me from the surging water. |
He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. | 17He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. | 18They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. |
He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. | 19He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. |
The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. | 20The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. | 21For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. |
For all his rules were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me. | 22For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. |
I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt. | 23I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning. |
So the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight. | 24The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. |
With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; | 25You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. |
with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. | 26You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. |
For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down. | 27For you deliver oppressed people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. |
For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness. | 28Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. My God illuminates the darkness around me. |
For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. | 29Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. |
This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. | 30The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. |
For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?— | 31Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? |
the God who equipped me with strength and made my way blameless. | 32The one true God gives me strength; he removes the obstacles in my way. |
He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. | 33He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. |
He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 34He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. |
You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great. | 35You give me your protective shield; your right hand supports me; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. |
You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip. | 36You widen my path; my feet do not slip. |
I pursued my enemies and overtook them, and did not turn back till they were consumed. | 37I chase my enemies and catch them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. |
I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise; they fell under my feet. | 38I beat them to death; they fall at my feet. |
For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. | 39You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. |
You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and those who hated me I destroyed. | 40You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. |
They cried for help, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them. | 41They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. |
I beat them fine as dust before the wind; I cast them out like the mire of the streets. | 42I grind them as fine windblown dust; I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets. |
You delivered me from strife with the people; you made me the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. | 43You rescue me from a hostile army; you make me a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. |
As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me; foreigners came cringing to me. | 44When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. Foreigners are powerless before me; |
Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses. | 45foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. |
The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation— | 46The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! |
the God who gave me vengeance and subdued peoples under me, | 47The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. |
who rescued me from my enemies; yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from the man of violence. | 48He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. |
For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing to your name. | 49So I will give you thanks before the nations, O LORD! I will sing praises to you! |
Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever. | 50He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever." |
