Psalm 18
1. David praises God for his manifold and marvelous blessings

It is God who arms me with strength
This phrase emphasizes the divine source of strength, highlighting the belief that true power and ability come from God. In the context of Psalm 18, David attributes his military victories and personal resilience to God's empowerment. This reflects a common biblical theme where God is seen as the provider of strength, as seen in Isaiah 40:29, "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." The imagery of God arming David suggests preparation for battle, aligning with Ephesians 6:10-18, where believers are encouraged to put on the full armor of God. This also points to the idea of God as a warrior, a motif found throughout the Old Testament, such as in Exodus 15:3, "The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name."

and makes my way clear.
This part of the verse speaks to divine guidance and providence. The notion of God making one's path clear suggests removing obstacles and providing direction, akin to Proverbs 3:6, "In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." In the historical context, David often faced literal and metaphorical paths filled with challenges, from evading King Saul to leading Israel. The phrase can also be seen as a type of Christ, who is described as "the way" in John 14:6, indicating that through Jesus, believers find a clear path to God. The idea of God clearing the way can also be connected to the Exodus narrative, where God led the Israelites through the wilderness, providing a path to the Promised Land.

Teaching Points
Divine Empowerment
Recognize that true strength comes from God. Just as David relied on God for strength, believers today are called to depend on God for empowerment in their daily lives.

Clear Pathways
Trust in God's ability to make your way clear. When faced with uncertainty or obstacles, seek God's guidance to navigate through life's challenges.

Gratitude for God's Provision
Cultivate a heart of thankfulness for the ways God equips and supports you. Reflect on past experiences where God has provided strength and clarity.

Spiritual Warfare
Understand that spiritual battles require divine strength. Equip yourself with God's power to stand firm against spiritual adversaries.

Faith in Action
Apply your faith by actively seeking God's strength and direction in your decisions and actions, trusting that He will lead you on the right path.(32) The verse should run on closely from the last. The italics spoil it.

Girdeth.--The importance of the girdle in a country where the dress was loose and flowing is shown by many passages of Scripture. It is essential to the warrior as here (comp. Ephesians 6:14, and the Greek expression, "to be girt" = to be armed), but also for all active exertion.

Way.--Here, not of conduct, but the military path, the march. Notice the variation in Samuel.

Verse 32. - It is God that girdeth me with strength (comp. ver. 39). And maketh my way perfect. Keeps me, i.e., in the right way - the way of his commandments.
