The LORD is a warrior
This phrase highlights the depiction of God as a divine warrior, a common theme in the Old Testament. In the context of Exodus 15, this is part of the Song of Moses, celebrating the Israelites' deliverance from Egypt and the defeat of Pharaoh's army at the Red Sea. The imagery of God as a warrior underscores His power and ability to protect and deliver His people. This concept is echoed in other scriptures, such as Isaiah 42:13, where God is described as a mighty warrior who will prevail against His enemies. The warrior motif also connects to the idea of God fighting spiritual battles on behalf of His people, as seen in Ephesians 6:10-18, where believers are called to put on the full armor of God.

the LORD is His name
This phrase emphasizes the covenant name of God, Yahweh, which is often translated as "the LORD" in English Bibles. This name signifies God's eternal, self-existent nature and His faithfulness to His promises. In the context of Exodus, God revealed this name to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14-15), establishing His identity and authority. The repetition of "the LORD" in this verse reinforces His unique and sovereign character. This name is central to the identity of God throughout the Bible, appearing frequently in the Psalms and prophetic books, and it is a reminder of His unchanging nature and His commitment to His people.

Teaching Points
God's Power and Protection
God is depicted as a warrior, emphasizing His power and ability to protect and deliver His people from their enemies. This should encourage believers to trust in God's strength and sovereignty in their own lives.

God's Faithfulness
The use of God's covenant name, Yahweh, in this verse reminds us of His faithfulness to His promises. Believers can find assurance in God's unchanging nature and His commitment to His people.

Spiritual Warfare
As God is a warrior, believers are called to engage in spiritual warfare, relying on God's strength and the armor of God described in Ephesians 6. This involves prayer, faith, and the Word of God as weapons against spiritual forces.

Praise and Worship
The context of this verse is a song of praise. Believers are encouraged to respond to God's mighty acts with worship and thanksgiving, recognizing His role as both Savior and Warrior.(3) The Lord is a man of war.--The directness and boldness of the anthropomorphism is markedly archaic, and is wisely retained by our translators. How turgid and yet weak are the Samaritan, "mighty in battle," and the LXX., "crusher of wars," in comparison!

The Lord is his name.--In the very name, Jehovah, is implied all might, all power, and so necessarily the strength to prevail in battle. The name, meaning "the Existent," implies that nothing else has any real existence independently of Him; and if no existence, then necessarily no strength.

Verse 3. - a man of war. A strong anthropomorphism, but one that could scarcely be misunderstood - "a man of war," meaning commonly "a warrior," or "one mighty in battle" (Psalm 24:8). God's might had just been proved, in that he alone had discomfited and destroyed the most potent armed force in the whole world. The Lord is his name. Jehovah - the alone-existing One "truly describes him," before whom all other existence fades and falls into nothingness. On the full meaning of the name, see the comment on Exodus 3:14.
