Cried Cry Crying Help Save Saviour
Psalm 18
1. David praises God for his manifold and marvelous blessings

They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—
This phrase reflects the desperation of those who oppose God's anointed, often seen in the context of David's enemies. In biblical history, crying out for help was a common response in times of distress, as seen in the Israelites' cries during their bondage in Egypt (Exodus 2:23). The absence of a savior here underscores the futility of opposing God's chosen ones. It also highlights the justice of God, who does not support the wicked in their rebellion against His will. This can be connected to the broader biblical theme that salvation and deliverance come from the Lord alone (Psalm 3:8).

to the LORD, but He did not answer.
This part of the verse emphasizes the sovereignty of God in choosing when and whom to answer. It reflects the principle that God hears the prayers of the righteous but is far from the wicked (Proverbs 15:29). The silence of God here serves as a form of judgment against those who have rejected His ways. This can be seen in the broader biblical narrative where God sometimes withholds His response as a consequence of sin, as in the case of Saul (1 Samuel 28:6). Theologically, it points to the necessity of a right relationship with God to receive His aid, a theme that is fulfilled in the New Testament through Jesus Christ, who intercedes for believers (Hebrews 7:25).

Persons / Places / Events
1. David
The author of Psalm 18, David is reflecting on his deliverance from his enemies and from the hand of Saul. This psalm is a song of thanksgiving for God's deliverance and protection.

2. Enemies of David
The adversaries who sought to harm David. In this verse, they are depicted as crying out for help but receiving no response from God.

3. The LORD (Yahweh)
The covenant name of God, who is portrayed as the ultimate deliverer and judge. In this context, He is the one who chooses not to answer the cries of David's enemies.
Teaching Points
The Consequences of Rebellion
This verse serves as a sobering reminder that persistent rebellion against God can lead to a point where He chooses not to respond to cries for help. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a right relationship with God.

God's Justice
God's refusal to answer the cries of David's enemies underscores His justice. He is not indifferent to evil, and there is a time when His patience with the wicked comes to an end.

The Importance of Repentance
The silence of God in response to the cries of the wicked highlights the necessity of genuine repentance. It is a call to turn back to God before it is too late.

Trust in God's Deliverance
For believers, this verse is a reassurance that God hears and delivers those who are faithful to Him, contrasting with His response to the wicked.(41) Cried.--Sam. 22 has "looked."

Verse 41. - They cried, but there was none to save them: even unto the Lord, but he answered them not. It seems strange, at first sight, that the heathen enemies of David should "cry unto the Lord," i.e. to Jehovah; and hence some have been driven to suppose that a victory over domestic enemies is here interpolated into the series of foreign victories. But it seems better to explain, with Hengstenberg and the 'Speaker's Commentary,' that the heathen did sometimes, as a last resort, pray to a foreign god, whom they seemed to find by experience to be more powerful than their own (see Jonah 1:14). Jehovah was known by name, as the God of the Israelites, to the surrounding nations. Mesha mentions him upon the Moabite Stone; and Sennacherib declared, by the mouth of Rabshakeh, "Am I come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord (Jehovah) said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it" (2 Kings 18:25).
