Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God-- | 1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, |
which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures-- | 2(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) |
concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh | 3Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; |
and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead. | 4And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: |
Through him we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the Gentiles, | 5By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: |
including you who are also called by Jesus Christ. | 6Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: |
To all who are in Rome, loved by God, called as saints. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 7To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because the news of your faith is being reported in all the world. | 8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. |
God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in telling the good news about his Son--that I constantly mention you, | 9For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; |
always asking in my prayers that if it is somehow in God's will, I may now at last succeed in coming to you. | 10Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. |
For I want very much to see you, so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, | 11For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; |
that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. | 12That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. |
Now I don't want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as I have had among the rest of the Gentiles. | 13Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. |
I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish. | 14I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. |
So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. | 15So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. |
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. | 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. |
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith. | 17For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. |
For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, | 18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; |
since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. | 19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. |
For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse. | 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: |
For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened. | 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. |
Claiming to be wise, they became fools | 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, |
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles. | 23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. |
Therefore God delivered them over in the desires of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. | 24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: |
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen. | 25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. |
For this reason God delivered them over to disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. | 26For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: |
The men in the same way also left natural relations with women and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error. | 27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. |
And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right. | 28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; |
They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, | 29Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, |
slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, | 30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, |
senseless, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful. | 31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: |
Although they know God's just sentence--that those who practice such things deserve to die--they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them. | 32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. |
