1As soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.1And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
2So Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so."2And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.
3And the chief priests accused him of many things.3And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.
4Pilate questioned him again, "Aren't you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!"4And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
5But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed.5But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.
6At the festival Pilate used to release for the people a prisoner whom they requested.6Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.
7There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion.7And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
8The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.8And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.
9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?"9But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
10For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.10For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.
11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.11But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.
12Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the King of the Jews?"12And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?
13Again they shouted, "Crucify him!"13And they cried out again, Crucify him.
14Pilate said to them, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him!"14Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.15And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
16The soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called the whole company together.16And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him.17And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
18And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
19They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage.19And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
20After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him. They led him out to crucify him.20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
21They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus's cross. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.21And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull).22And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.
23They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.23And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.
24Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get.24And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.
25Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him.25And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
26The inscription of the charge written against him was: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27They crucified two criminals with him, one on his right and one on his left.27And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.
2828And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
29Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,29And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,
30save yourself by coming down from the cross!"30Save thyself, and come down from the cross.
31In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!31Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.
32Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.32Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.
33When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? " which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? "34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
35When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "See, he's calling for Elijah."35And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down."36And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
37Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last.37And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
38Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
39When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"39And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
40There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.40There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
41In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.41(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
42When it was already evening, because it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),42And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,
43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus's body.43Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.
44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died.44And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.
45When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph.45And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
46After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.46And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.
47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.47And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.
