As soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. | 1Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. |
So Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so." | 2Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say." |
And the chief priests accused him of many things. | 3The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. |
Pilate questioned him again, "Aren't you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!" | 4Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!" |
But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed. | 5But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed. |
At the festival Pilate used to release for the people a prisoner whom they requested. | 6Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. |
There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion. | 7The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. |
The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom. | 8The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. |
Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?" | 9Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" |
For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed him over. | 10For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. |
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead. | 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. |
Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the King of the Jews?" | 12Answering again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?" |
Again they shouted, "Crucify him!" | 13They shouted back, "Crucify Him!" |
Pilate said to them, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him!" | 14But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!" |
Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified. | 15Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. |
The soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called the whole company together. | 16The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort. |
They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him. | 17They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; |
And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" | 18and they began to acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" |
They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage. | 19They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him. |
After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him. They led him out to crucify him. | 20After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him. |
They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus's cross. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. | 21They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross. |
They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull). | 22Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. |
They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. | 23They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. |
Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get. | 24And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take. |
Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him. | 25It was the third hour when they crucified Him. |
The inscription of the charge written against him was: THE KING OF THE JEWS. | 26The inscription of the charge against Him read, "THE KING OF THE JEWS." |
They crucified two criminals with him, one on his right and one on his left. | 27They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. |
| 28And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with transgressors." |
Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, | 29Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, |
save yourself by coming down from the cross!" | 30save Yourself, and come down from the cross!" |
In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, "He saved others, but he cannot save himself! | 31In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself. |
Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with him taunted him. | 32"Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him. |
When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. | 33When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. |
And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? " which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? " | 34At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" |
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "See, he's calling for Elijah." | 35When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah." |
Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down." | 36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down." |
Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. | 37And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. |
Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. | 38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. |
When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" | 39When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" |
There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. | 40There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome. |
In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem. | 41When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem. |
When it was already evening, because it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath), | 42When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, |
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus's body. | 43Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. |
Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died. | 44Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. |
When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. | 45And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. |
After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. | 46Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. |
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid. | 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid. |
