His account is woven throughout the Old Testament, and his descendants, the tribe of Benjamin, play crucial roles in the narrative of Israel. The name "Benjamin" means "son of the right hand," reflecting a position of favor and strength. Birth and Early Life: Benjamin's birth is recorded in Genesis 35:16-18. Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife, died during childbirth, naming her son Ben-Oni, meaning "son of my sorrow." However, Jacob renamed him Benjamin. This event took place near Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. Benjamin's birth was marked by both joy and sorrow, as Rachel's death deeply affected Jacob. Family Dynamics: As the youngest of Jacob's twelve sons, Benjamin was particularly cherished by his father. This favoritism is evident in the narrative of Joseph, Benjamin's full brother. When Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, rose to power in Egypt, he tested his brothers' integrity by demanding that they bring Benjamin to him (Genesis 42-44). The brothers' protective attitude towards Benjamin demonstrated their repentance and growth since their betrayal of Joseph. Tribe of Benjamin: The tribe of Benjamin became one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Despite being the smallest tribe, it was known for its fierce warriors. The tribe's territory was strategically located between the powerful tribes of Judah and Ephraim, including the city of Jerusalem. This location played a significant role in the tribe's influence and interactions with other tribes. Notable Figures from the Tribe of Benjamin: 1. King Saul: The first king of Israel, Saul, was a Benjamite. His reign marked the transition from the period of the judges to the monarchy (1 Samuel 9:1-2). Saul's kingship, however, was marred by disobedience to God, leading to his rejection as king. 2. Jonathan: Saul's son, Jonathan, is celebrated for his deep friendship with David and his loyalty to God's chosen king, despite his father's animosity towards David (1 Samuel 18:1-4). 3. Mordecai and Esther: In the Persian Empire, Mordecai and his cousin Esther, both Benjamites, played pivotal roles in saving the Jewish people from annihilation, as recorded in the Book of Esther. 4. Apostle Paul: Known as Saul of Tarsus before his conversion, the Apostle Paul was a Benjamite. His contributions to the New Testament and the spread of Christianity are unparalleled (Philippians 3:5). Tribal Characteristics and Legacy: The tribe of Benjamin was known for its valor and skill in battle. Judges 20:16 highlights the Benjamites' prowess, noting that they could sling stones with great accuracy. Despite their small size, they were often at the center of significant biblical events, including the civil war against the other tribes of Israel (Judges 19-21). In the division of the kingdom after Solomon's reign, the tribe of Benjamin remained loyal to the house of David, aligning with the tribe of Judah to form the Southern Kingdom of Judah (1 Kings 12:21). Conclusion: Benjamin's legacy is multifaceted, encompassing themes of favor, loyalty, and redemption. His descendants' contributions to Israel's history and the early Christian church underscore the enduring impact of this small but influential tribe. ATS Bible Dictionary BenjaminThe youngest son of Jacob and Rachel, Genesis 35:16-18. Rachel died immediately after he was born, and with her last breath named him Ben-oni, the son of my sorrow; but Jacob called him Benjamin, son of my right hand. He was a great comfort to his father, who saw in him the beloved wife he had buried, and Joseph whose loss he mourned. He could hardly be persuaded to let him go with his brethren to Egypt, Genesis 42:38. The tribe of Benjamin was small at first and was almost exterminated in the days of the Judges, Jud 20:1-48, but afterwards greatly increased, 2 Chronicles 14:8 17:17. It was valiant, Genesis 49:27, and "beloved of the Lord," dwelling safely by him, De 33:12; for its territory adjoined Judah and the Holy City on the north. At the revolt of the ten tribes, Benjamin adhered to the cause of Judah; and the two tribes were ever afterwards closely united, 1 Kings 11:13 12:20 Ezra 4:1 10:9. King Saul and Saul of Tarsus were both Benjamites, Philippians 3:5. Easton's Bible Dictionary Son of my right hand. (1.) The younger son of Jacob by Rachel (Genesis 35:18). His birth took place at Ephrath, on the road between Bethel and Bethlehem, at a short distance from the latter place. His mother died in giving him birth, and with her last breath named him Ben-oni, son of my pain, a name which was changed by his father into Benjamin. His posterity are called Benjamites (Genesis 49:27; Deuteronomy 33:12; Joshua 18:21). The tribe of Benjamin at the Exodus was the smallest but one (Numbers 1:36, 37; Psalm 68:27). During the march its place was along with Manasseh and Ephraim on the west of the tabernacle. At the entrance into Canaan it counted 45,600 warriors. It has been inferred by some from the words of Jacob (Genesis 49:27) that the figure of a wolf was on the tribal standard. This tribe is mentioned in Romans 11:1; Philippians 3:5. The inheritance of this tribe lay immediately to the south of that of Ephraim, and was about 26 miles in length and 12 in breadth. Its eastern boundary was the Jordan. Dan intervened between it and the Philistines. Its chief towns are named in Joshua 18:21-28. The history of the tribe contains a sad record of a desolating civil war in which they were engaged with the other eleven tribes. By it they were almost exterminated (Judges 20:20, 21; 21:10). (see GIBEAH.) The first king of the Jews was Saul, a Benjamite. A close alliance was formed between this tribe and that of Judah in the time of David (2 Samuel 19:16, 17), which continued after his death (1 Kings 11:13; 12:20). After the Exile these two tribes formed the great body of the Jewish nation (Ezra 1:5; 10:9). The tribe of Benjamin was famous for its archers (1 Samuel 20:20, 36; 2 Samuel 1:22; 1 Chronicles 8:40; 12:2) and slingers (Judges 20:6). The gate of Benjamin, on the north side of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 37:13; 38:7; Zechariah 14:10), was so called because it led in the direction of the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. It is called by Jeremiah (20:2) "the high gate of Benjamin;" also "the gate of the children of the people" (17:19). (Comp. 2 Kings 14:13.) Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary 1. (n.)
