Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.1As soon as it was morning, the high priests convened a meeting with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. They bound Jesus with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”2Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so."
And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.3The high priests kept accusing him of many things.
Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”4So Pilate asked him again, "Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!"
But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.5But since Jesus no longer answered, Pilate was astonished.
Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.6At every festival, Pilate would release any one prisoner whom the people requested.
And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.7Now there was a man in prison named Barabbas. He had been with the insurgents who had committed murder during the rebellion.
Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.8So the crowd came and began to request that Pilate do for them what he always did.
But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"
For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.10because he knew that the high priests had handed him over due to jealousy.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.11But the high priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release Barabbas for them instead.
Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”12So Pilate asked them again, "Then what should I do with the man you call 'the King of the Jews'?"
So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”13"Crucify him!" they shouted back.
Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”14"Why?" Pilate asked them. "What has he done wrong?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"
So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.15So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.16The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters) and called out the whole guard.
And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, and placed it on his head.
and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”18They began to greet him, "Long live the king of the Jews!"
Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.19They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, kneeling in front of him, and worshiping him.
And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.20When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the purple robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.
Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.21They forced a certain passer-by named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who happened to be coming in from the country, to carry Jesus' cross.
And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.22They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means Skull Place.
Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.23They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he wouldn't accept it.
And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.24Then they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice to see what each one would get.
Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."
With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.27They crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and the other on his left.
So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”28
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,29Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—
save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.31In the same way, the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. They kept saying, "He saved others, but can't save himself!
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.32Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, since seeing is believing!" Even the men who were crucified with him kept insulting him.
Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”34At three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?")
Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”35When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "Listen! He's calling for Elijah!"
Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”36So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink, saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down!"
And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.37Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38The curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”39When the centurion who stood facing Jesus saw how he had cried out and breathed his last, he said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!"
There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome,40Now there were women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of young James and Joseph, and Salome.
who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.41They used to accompany him and care for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him were there, too.
Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,42It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening,
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.44Pilate was amazed to hear that Jesus had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead.
So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.45When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse.
Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.46Joseph bought some linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.47Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body had been laid.
