Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him | 1One day, while Jesus was teaching the people in the Temple and telling them the good news, the high priests and the scribes came with the elders |
and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?” | 2and asked him, "Tell us: By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" |
But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: | 3He answered them, "I, too, will ask you a question. Tell me: |
The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?” | 4Was John's authority to baptize from heaven or from humans?" |
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ | 5They discussed this among themselves: "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' |
But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” | 6But if we say, 'From humans,' all the people will stone us to death, because they are convinced that John was a prophet." |
So they answered that they did not know where it was from. | 7So they answered that they didn't know where it was from. |
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” | 8Then Jesus told them, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I'm doing these things." |
Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. | 9Then he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went abroad for a long time. |
Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. | 10At the right time he sent a servant to the farmers in order to get his share of the produce of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him back empty-handed. |
Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. | 11He sent another servant, and they beat him, too, treated him shamefully, and sent him back empty-handed. |
And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out. | 12Then he sent a third, and they wounded him and threw him out, too. |
“Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’ | 13"Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What should I do? I'll send my son whom I love. Maybe they'll respect him.' |
But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’ | 14But when the farmers saw him, they talked it over among themselves and said, 'This is the heir. Let's kill him so that the inheritance will be ours!' |
So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? | 15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? |
He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!” | 16He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others." Those who heard him said, "That must never happen!" |
Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’? | 17But Jesus looked at them and asked, "What does this text mean: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone'? |
Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” | 18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls." |
And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people—for they knew He had spoken this parable against them. | 19When the scribes and the high priests realized that Jesus had told this parable about them, they wanted to arrest him right then, but they were afraid of the crowd. |
So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor. | 20So they watched him closely and sent spies who pretended to be honest men in order to trap him in what he would say. They wanted to hand him over to the jurisdiction of the governor, |
Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: | 21so they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you're right in what you say and teach, and that you don't favor any individual, but teach the way of God truthfully. |
Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” | 22Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" |
But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test Me? | 23But he discerned their craftiness and responded to them, |
Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said, “Caesar’s.” | 24"Show me a denarius. Whose face and name does it have?" "Caesar's," they replied. |
And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” | 25So he told them, "Then give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." |
But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent. | 26So they couldn't catch him before the people in what he said. Amazed at his answer, they became silent. |
Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, | 27Now some Sadducees, who claim there is no resurrection, came to Jesus |
saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. | 28and asked him, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, the man should marry the widow and have children for his brother. |
Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. | 29Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died childless. |
And the second took her as wife, and he died childless. | 30Then the second |
Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died. | 31and the third married her. In the same way, all seven died and left no children. |
Last of all the woman died also. | 32Finally, the woman died, too. |
Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.” | 33Now in the resurrection, whose wife will the woman be, since the seven had married her?" |
Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. | 34Jesus told them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are married, |
But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; | 35but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. |
nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. | 36Nor can they die anymore, because they are like the angels and, since they share in the resurrection, are God's children. |
But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ | 37Even Moses demonstrated in the story about the bush that the dead are raised, when he calls the Lord, 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' |
For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.” | 38He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, because he considers all people to be alive to him." |
Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” | 39Then some of the scribes replied, "Teacher, you have given a fine answer." |
But after that they dared not question Him anymore. | 40Then they no longer dared to ask him another question. |
And He said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? | 41Then he asked them, "How can people say that the Messiah is David's son? |
Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, | 42Because David himself in the book of Psalms says, 'The Lord told my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, |
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’ | 43until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' |
Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?” | 44So David calls him 'Lord.' Then how can he be his son?" |
Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, | 45While all the people were listening, he told his disciples, |
“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, | 46"Beware of the scribes! They like to walk around in long robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. |
who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.” | 47They devour widows' houses and say long prayers to cover it up. They will receive greater condemnation!" |
