For the music director; by the LORD's servant David, who sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. He said: "I love you, LORD, my source of strength! | 1I love you, LORD; you are my strength. |
The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge. | 2The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. |
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. | 3I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies. |
The waves of death engulfed me, the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. | 4The ropes of death entangled me; floods of destruction swept over me. |
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me, the snares of death trapped me. | 5The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path. |
In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried out to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. | 6But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears. |
The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry. | 7Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the mountains shook; they quaked because of his anger. |
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. | 8Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. |
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. | 9He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. |
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. | 10Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. |
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. | 11He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dark rain clouds. |
From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals. | 12Thick clouds shielded the brightness around him and rained down hail and burning coals. |
The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted. | 13The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded amid the hail and burning coals. |
He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them. | 14He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies; great bolts of lightning flashed, and they were confused. |
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose. | 15Then at your command, O LORD, at the blast of your breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare. |
He reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me from the surging water. | 16He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. |
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. | 17He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. | 18They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the LORD supported me. |
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. | 19He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me. |
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. | 20The LORD rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence. |
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. | 21For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned from my God to follow evil. |
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. | 22I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees. |
I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning. | 23I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin. |
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. | 24The LORD rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence. |
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. | 25To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. |
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. | 26To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. |
For you deliver oppressed people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. | 27You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud. |
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. My God illuminates the darkness around me. | 28You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness. |
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. | 29In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. |
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. | 30God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. |
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? | 31For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock? |
The one true God gives me strength; he removes the obstacles in my way. | 32God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect. |
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. | 33He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. |
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. | 34He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. |
You give me your protective shield; your right hand supports me; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. | 35You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great. |
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. | 36You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. |
I chase my enemies and catch them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. | 37I chased my enemies and caught them; I did not stop until they were conquered. |
I beat them to death; they fall at my feet. | 38I struck them down so they could not get up; they fell beneath my feet. |
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. | 39You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. |
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. | 40You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. |
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. | 41They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the LORD, but he refused to answer. |
I grind them as fine windblown dust; I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets. | 42I ground them as fine as dust in the wind. I swept them into the gutter like dirt. |
You rescue me from a hostile army; you make me a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. | 43You gave me victory over my accusers. You appointed me ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. |
When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. Foreigners are powerless before me; | 44As soon as they hear of me, they submit; foreign nations cringe before me. |
foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. | 45They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. |
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! | 46The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted! |
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. | 47He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he subdues the nations under me |
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. | 48and rescues me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents. |
So I will give you thanks before the nations, O LORD! I will sing praises to you! | 49For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. |
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever." | 50You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever. |
