Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more disciples than John | 1Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John |
(although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were), | 2(although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were), |
he left Judea and set out once more for Galilee. | 3He left Judea and went away again into Galilee. |
But he had to pass through Samaria. | 4And He had to pass through Samaria. |
Now he came to a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. | 5So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph; |
Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down beside the well. It was about noon. | 6and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. |
A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me some water to drink." | 7There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." |
(For his disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies.) | 8For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. |
So the Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you--a Jew--ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.) | 9Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) |
Jesus answered her, "If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, 'Give me some water to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." | 10Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." |
"Sir," the woman said to him, "you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water? | 11She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? |
Surely you're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock." | 12"You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?" |
Jesus replied, "Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again. | 13Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; |
But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life." | 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." |
The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water." | 15The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw." |
He said to her, "Go call your husband and come back here." | 16He said to her, "Go, call your husband and come here." |
The woman replied, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "Right you are when you said, 'I have no husband,' | 17The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have correctly said, 'I have no husband'; |
for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!" | 18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly." |
The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet. | 19The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. |
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem." | 20"Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." |
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. | 21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. |
You people worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews. | 22"You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. |
But a time is coming--and now is here--when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers. | 23"But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. |
God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." | 24"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." |
The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (the one called Christ); "whenever he comes, he will tell us everything." | 25The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us." |
Jesus said to her, "I, the one speaking to you, am he." | 26Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He." |
Now at that very moment his disciples came back. They were shocked because he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, "What do you want?" or "Why are you speaking with her?" | 27At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why do You speak with her?" |
Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people, | 28So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, |
"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can't be the Messiah, can he?" | 29"Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?" |
So they left the town and began coming to him. | 30They went out of the city, and were coming to Him. |
Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something." | 31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." |
But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about." | 32But He said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." |
So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one brought him anything to eat, did they?" | 33So the disciples were saying to one another, "No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?" |
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work. | 34Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. |
Don't you say, 'There are four more months and then comes the harvest?' I tell you, look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest! | 35"Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest '? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. |
The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together. | 36"Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. |
For in this instance the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.' | 37"For in this case the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.' |
I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor." | 38"I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor." |
Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I ever did." | 39From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all the things that I have done." |
So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking him to stay with them. He stayed there two days, | 40So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. |
and because of his word many more believed. | 41Many more believed because of His word; |
They said to the woman, "No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world." | 42and they were saying to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world." |
After the two days he departed from there to Galilee. | 43After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. |
(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) | 44For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. |
So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalem at the feast (for they themselves had gone to the feast). | 45So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast. |
Now he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had made the water wine. In Capernaum there was a certain royal official whose son was sick. | 46Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. |
When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die. | 47When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. |
So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders you will never believe!" | 48So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe." |
"Sir," the official said to him, "come down before my child dies." | 49The royal official said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." |
Jesus told him, "Go home; your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off for home. | 50Jesus said to him, "Go; your son lives." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. |
While he was on his way down, his slaves met him and told him that his son was going to live. | 51As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. |
So he asked them the time when his condition began to improve, and they told him, "Yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon the fever left him." | 52So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him." |
Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he himself believed along with his entire household. | 53So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives"; and he himself believed and his whole household. |
Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee. | 54This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee. |
