Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his time had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end. | 1Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. |
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, that he should betray Jesus. | 2Now by the time of supper, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, to betray Him. |
Because Jesus knew that the Father had handed all things over to him, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, | 3Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands, that He had come from God, and that He was going back to God. |
he got up from the meal, removed his outer clothes, took a towel and tied it around himself. | 4So He got up from supper, laid aside His robe, took a towel, and tied it around Himself. |
He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself. | 5Next, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him. |
Then he came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" | 6He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, "Lord, are You going to wash my feet?" |
Jesus replied, "You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things." | 7Jesus answered him, "What I'm doing you don't understand now, but afterward you will know."" |
Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me." | 8You will never wash my feet--ever!" Peter said. Jesus replied, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with Me." |
Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!" | 9Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." |
Jesus replied, "The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not every one of you." | 10"One who has bathed," Jesus told him, "doesn't need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you." |
(For Jesus knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, "Not every one of you is clean.") | 11For He knew who would betray Him. This is why He said, "You are not all clean." |
So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you? | 12When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined again and said to them, "Do you know what I have done for you? |
You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and do so correctly, for that is what I am. | 13You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am. |
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another's feet. | 14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. |
For I have given you an example--you should do just as I have done for you. | 15For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you. |
I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent him. | 16"I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. |
If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them. | 17If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. |
"What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, 'The one who eats my bread has turned against me.' | 18I'm not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: The one who eats My bread has raised his heel against Me. |
I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am he. | 19"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. |
I tell you the solemn truth, whoever accepts the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." | 20I assure you: Whoever receives anyone I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me." |
When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressed in spirit, and testified, "I tell you the solemn truth, one of you will betray me." | 21When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit and testified, "I assure you: One of you will betray Me!" |
The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexed to know which of them he was talking about. | 22The disciples started looking at one another--uncertain which one He was speaking about. |
One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was at the table to the right of Jesus in a place of honor. | 23One of His disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining close beside Jesus. |
So Simon Peter gestured to this disciple to ask Jesus who it was he was referring to. | 24Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was He was talking about. |
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved leaned back against Jesus' chest and asked him, "Lord, who is it?" | 25So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, "Lord, who is it?" |
Jesus replied, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish." Then he dipped the piece of bread in the dish and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon's son. | 26Jesus replied, "He's the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it." When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son. |
And after Judas took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are about to do, do quickly." | 27After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Therefore Jesus told him, "What you're doing, do quickly." |
(Now none of those present at the table understood why Jesus said this to Judas. | 28None of those reclining at the table knew why He told him this. |
Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.) | 29Since Judas kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival," or that he should give something to the poor. |
Judas took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.) | 30After receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night. |
When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. | 31When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. |
If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away. | 32If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him at once. |
Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me, and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders, 'Where I am going you cannot come,' now I tell you the same. | 33"Children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, Where I am going you cannot come,' so now I tell you. |
"I give you a new commandment--to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. | 34"I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. |
Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples--if you have love for one another." | 35By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."" |
Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later." | 36Lord," Simon Peter said to Him, "where are You going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later."" |
Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!" | 37Lord," Peter asked, "why can't I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You!" |
Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times! | 38Jesus replied, "Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you: A rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times. |
