King James Bible | New International Version |
These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. | 1"All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. |
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. | 2They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. |
And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. | 3They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. |
But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. | 4I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, |
But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? | 5but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' |
But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. | 6Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. |
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. | 7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. |
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: | 8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: |
Of sin, because they believe not on me; | 9about sin, because people do not believe in me; |
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; | 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; |
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. | 11and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. |
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. | 12"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. |
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. | 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. |
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. | 14He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. |
All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. | 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you." |
A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. | 16Jesus went on to say, "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." |
Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? | 17At this, some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" |
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. | 18They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." |
Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? | 19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? |
Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. | 20Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. |
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. | 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. |
And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. | 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. |
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. | 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. |
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | 24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. |
These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. | 25"Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. |
At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: | 26In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. |
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. | 27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. |
I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. | 28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." |
His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. | 29Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. |
Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. | 30Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." |
Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? | 31"Do you now believe?" Jesus replied. |
Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. | 32"A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. |
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. | 33"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." |
