He said: "I love you, Lord, my strength. | 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said, I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. |
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my stronghold in whom I take refuge, my shield, the glory of my salvation, and my high tower." | 2The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. |
I cried out to the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I was delivered from my enemies. | 3I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. |
The cords of death entangled me; the rivers of Belial made me afraid. | 4The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. |
The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me. | 5The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. |
In my distress I cried to the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his Temple he heard my voice; my cry reached his ears. | 6In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears. |
The world shook and trembled; the foundations of the mountains quaked, they shook because he was angry. | 7Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth. |
In his anger smoke poured out of his nostrils, and consuming fire from his mouth; coals were lit from it. | 8There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. |
He bent the sky and descended, and darkness was under his feet. | 9He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. |
He rode upon a cherub and flew; he soared upon the wings of the wind. | 10And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness his hiding place, his canopy surrounding him was dark waters and thick clouds. | 11He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. |
The brightness before him scattered the thick clouds, with hail stones and flashes of fire. | 12At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire. |
Then the LORD thundered in the heavens, and the Most High sounded aloud, calling for hail stones and flashes of fire. | 13The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. |
He shot his arrows and scattered them; with many lightning bolts he frightened them. | 14Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them. |
Then the channels of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were uncovered because of your rebuke, LORD, because of the blast from the breath of your nostrils. | 15Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. |
He reached down and took me; he drew me from many waters. | 16He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. |
He delivered me from my strong enemies, from those who hated me because they were stronger than I. | 17He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. | 18They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay. |
He brought me out to a spacious place; he delivered me, for in me he takes delight. | 19He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. |
The LORD will reward me because I am righteous; because my hands are clean he will restore me; | 20The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. |
because I have kept the ways of the LORD, and I have not wickedly departed from my God; | 21For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. |
because all his judgments were always before me, and I did not cast off his statutes. | 22For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me. |
I was upright before him, and I kept myself from iniquity. | 23I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity. |
So the LORD restored me according to my righteousness, because my hands were clean in his sight. | 24Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight. |
To the holy, you show your gracious love, to the upright, you show yourself upright; | 25With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright; |
to the pure, you show yourself pure, and to the morally corrupt, you appear to be perverse. | 26With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward. |
Indeed, you deliver the oppressed, but you bring down those who exalt themselves in their own eyes. | 27For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks. |
For you, LORD, make my lamp shine; my God enlightens my darkness. | 28For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. |
With your help I will run through an army, with help from my God I leap over walls. | 29For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. |
As for God, his way is upright; the word of God is pure; he is a shield to all those who take refuge in him. | 30As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. |
For who is God but the LORD, and who is a Rock other than our God?— | 31For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God? |
the God who clothes me with strength, and who makes my way upright; | 32It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. |
who makes my feet swift as the deer; who makes me stand on high places; | 33He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places. |
who teaches my hands to make war, and my arms to bend a bronze bow. | 34He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. |
You have given to me the shield of your deliverance, and your right hand holds me up; your gentleness made me great. | 35Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. |
You make a broad place for my steps, so my feet won't slip. | 36Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip. |
I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn around until they were utterly defeated. | 37I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed. |
I struck them down, so they are not able to rise up; they fell under my feet. | 38I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet. |
You clothed me with strength for war; you will subdue under me those who rise up against me. | 39For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me. |
You have made my enemies turn their back to me, and I will destroy those who hate me. | 40Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me. |
They cried out for deliverance, but there was no one to deliver; they cried out to the LORD, but he did not answer them. | 41They cried, but there was none to save them: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not. |
I ground them like wind-swept dust; I emptied them out like dirt in the street. | 42Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind: I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets. |
You rescued me from conflict with the people; you made me head of the nations. People who did not know me will serve me. | 43Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me. |
When they hear of me, they will obey me; foreigners will submit to me. | 44As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me. |
Foreigners will wilt away; they will come trembling out of their stronghold. | 45The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places. |
The LORD lives! Blessed be my Rock! May the God of my deliverance be exalted! | 46The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted. |
He is the God who executes vengeance on my behalf; who destroys peoples under me; | 47It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me. |
who delivers me from my enemies. Truly you will exalt me above those who oppose me; you will deliver me from the violent person. | 48He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man. |
Therefore, I will give thanks to you among the nations, LORD; I will sing praises to your name. | 49Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name. |
He is the one who gives victories to his king; who shows gracious love to his anointed, to David and his seed forever. | 50Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore. |
