He also took from the city
This phrase indicates the action of removal or capture, emphasizing the thoroughness of the Babylonian conquest. The Hebrew root for "took" is "לָקַח" (laqach), which often implies taking possession or seizing. Historically, this reflects the Babylonian strategy of dismantling the leadership and infrastructure of conquered cities to prevent rebellion and ensure control.

a court official
The term "court official" refers to a person of significant status within the royal administration. The Hebrew word used here is "סָרִיס" (saris), which can mean a eunuch or a high-ranking officer. This highlights the importance of the individual, as such officials were often trusted advisors or administrators in the king's court, playing crucial roles in governance.

who had been appointed over the men of war
This phrase describes the official's military responsibility. The Hebrew root "פָּקַד" (paqad) means to appoint or oversee, indicating a position of authority and trust. This reflects the organized military structure of Judah, which was systematically dismantled by the Babylonians to weaken the nation's defense capabilities.

seven trusted royal advisors
The number seven often symbolizes completeness or perfection in the Bible, suggesting these advisors were the full complement of the king's counsel. The Hebrew word for "trusted" is "רָאָה" (ra'ah), meaning to see or perceive, implying these advisors were insightful and reliable. Their capture signifies the loss of wise counsel and strategic planning for the nation.

the secretary to the commander of the army
This role was crucial for military logistics and communication. The Hebrew term "סֹפֵר" (sopher) means scribe or secretary, indicating a person responsible for recording and managing military affairs. The capture of such an individual would disrupt the army's operations and further destabilize the nation's defense.

who enlisted the people of the land
This phrase highlights the role of recruitment and organization within the military. The Hebrew root "סָפַר" (saphar) means to count or enroll, suggesting a systematic approach to building the army. The capture of this person would hinder the ability to muster troops, leaving the nation vulnerable.

and sixty men who were found in the city
The number sixty, while not as symbolically significant as seven, indicates a substantial group. These men likely represented the remaining leadership or influential figures within the city. Their capture signifies the complete subjugation of Jerusalem's societal structure, ensuring no potential leaders remained to rally the people against Babylonian rule.

(25) An eunuch, which had the charge of the men of war.--Omit the article before "charge." The Hebrew term (Pakid) conveys the meaning of "deputy," a superintendent under a chief commander. The officer in question had probably, together with the persons named in Jeremiah 52:24, been more conspicuous than his fellows in resisting the Chaldaeans.

Seven men.--2Kings 25:19 gives "five" as the number. Here also we have to think of the exile as the punishment of prominence in the defence of the city. The chief scribe of the army, the "secretary of war," would naturally occupy such a position. The description of the men as those "that were near the king's person" (literally, saw the king's face) implies a high official rank.
