Isaiah 60
1. The glory of the church in the abundant access of the Gentiles.
15. And the great blessings after a short affliction

Then all your people will be righteous;
This phrase speaks to the future transformation and sanctification of God's people. In the context of Isaiah, this prophecy points to a time when Israel will be fully restored and purified. The concept of righteousness is central to the covenant relationship between God and His people, as seen in passages like Jeremiah 31:33-34, which speaks of God's law being written on their hearts. This righteousness is not self-derived but is granted by God, aligning with New Testament teachings such as 2 Corinthians 5:21, where believers are made righteous through Christ.

they will possess the land forever;
The promise of land possession is a recurring theme in the Old Testament, beginning with God's covenant with Abraham in Genesis 17:8. This phrase emphasizes the eternal nature of this promise, suggesting a fulfillment that transcends temporal boundaries. Historically, the land of Israel has been central to Jewish identity and faith. Theologically, this eternal possession can be seen as a type of the eternal inheritance promised to believers in the New Testament, as in Hebrews 11:16, which speaks of a heavenly country.

they are the branch of My planting,
The imagery of a branch is significant in biblical literature, often symbolizing growth, life, and connection to God. In Isaiah 11:1, the "Branch" is a messianic title referring to Jesus Christ, indicating that the ultimate fulfillment of this prophecy is found in Him. The idea of planting suggests intentionality and care by God, as seen in Psalm 1:3, where the righteous are likened to a tree planted by streams of water. This phrase underscores God's active role in establishing and nurturing His people.

the work of My hands,
This phrase highlights God's sovereignty and creative power. It echoes the creation narrative in Genesis, where God forms humanity with His hands. Theologically, it emphasizes that the transformation and establishment of God's people are acts of divine craftsmanship, not human effort. Ephesians 2:10 reinforces this idea, stating that believers are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. This underscores the intimate and purposeful relationship between God and His people.

so that I may be glorified.
The ultimate purpose of God's actions is His own glory. This aligns with the broader biblical narrative, where God's glory is the end goal of creation and redemption, as seen in passages like Romans 11:36. In Isaiah, God's glory is often associated with His redemptive acts and the restoration of His people. This phrase serves as a reminder that the righteousness, possession, and establishment of God's people are ultimately for the display of His majesty and splendor, pointing to the doxological focus of all Scripture.

Persons / Places / Events
1. The People of Israel
The verse speaks to the people of Israel, God's chosen nation, who are promised a future of righteousness and eternal possession of the land.

2. The Land
Refers to the Promised Land, a central theme in the Old Testament, symbolizing God's covenant and blessings to His people.

3. God
The divine speaker in this passage, emphasizing His role as the planter and creator, whose ultimate purpose is His own glorification.

4. The Branch
Symbolic of the people of Israel as a product of God's planting, indicating growth, life, and divine care.

5. Righteousness
A state of being in right standing with God, which is promised to all of God's people in this prophetic vision.
Teaching Points
Righteousness as a Gift
Emphasize that righteousness is not earned but given by God. It is a result of His work and grace in our lives.

Eternal Inheritance
Reflect on the promise of eternal inheritance, not just in a physical land but in the Kingdom of God, which believers are part of through faith in Christ.

God's Glory as the Ultimate Purpose
Understand that the ultimate purpose of God's work in our lives is His glorification. Our lives should reflect His glory.

The Role of the Believer
As branches of God's planting, believers are called to bear fruit, living lives that reflect God's righteousness and purpose.

Hope in Prophetic Fulfillment
Encourage hope and trust in God's promises, knowing that His prophetic words will be fulfilled in His perfect timing.(21) Thy people also shall be all righteous . . .--The city is to realise the as yet unfulfilled ideal of Psalms 15 and Psalm 21:5 Evil will be blotted out, and, therefore, there will be no forfeiture of the inheritance. In the "branch" we have the words which had been prominent in Isaiah 11:1, and which is now extended from the ideal representative of the nation to the whole body of the people.

Verse 21. - Thy people also shall be all righteous. Here the prophet touches the root of the matter. Pain and sorrow are the fruit of sin. Once let sin disappear, and sorrow goes with it. It is the foundation of all the glory and all the happiness of the redeemed in their Lord's final kingdom, that they are cleansed from all defilement of sin, and "are as the angels" (Mark 12:25). They shall inherit the land; rather, the earth - the "new heavens and new earth" of Isaiah:17; 66:22. The branch of my planting; rather, a sprout of my planting; i.e. a sprout which I have planted.
