New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. | 1A Psalm of David. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. |
For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. | 2For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. |
Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. | 3Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. |
Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. | 4Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. |
Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. | 5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. |
He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. | 6And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. |
Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. | 7Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. |
Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper— it only leads to harm. | 8Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. |
For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the LORD will possess the land. | 9For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. |
Soon the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone. | 10For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. |
The lowly will possess the land and will live in peace and prosperity. | 11But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. |
The wicked plot against the godly; they snarl at them in defiance. | 12The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. |
But the Lord just laughs, for he sees their day of judgment coming. | 13The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. |
The wicked draw their swords and string their bows to kill the poor and the oppressed, to slaughter those who do right. | 14The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. |
But their swords will stab their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. | 15Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. |
It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and rich. | 16A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. |
For the strength of the wicked will be shattered, but the LORD takes care of the godly. | 17For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous. |
Day by day the LORD takes care of the innocent, and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever. | 18The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. |
They will not be disgraced in hard times; even in famine they will have more than enough. | 19They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. |
But the wicked will die. The LORD’s enemies are like flowers in a field— they will disappear like smoke. | 20But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. |
The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers. | 21The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. |
Those the LORD blesses will possess the land, but those he curses will die. | 22For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off. |
The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. | 23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. |
Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand. | 24Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. |
Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread. | 25I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. |
The godly always give generous loans to others, and their children are a blessing. | 26He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. |
Turn from evil and do good, and you will live in the land forever. | 27Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. |
For the LORD loves justice, and he will never abandon the godly. He will keep them safe forever, but the children of the wicked will die. | 28For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. |
The godly will possess the land and will live there forever. | 29The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. |
The godly offer good counsel; they teach right from wrong. | 30The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. |
They have made God’s law their own, so they will never slip from his path. | 31The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. |
The wicked wait in ambush for the godly, looking for an excuse to kill them. | 32The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. |
But the LORD will not let the wicked succeed or let the godly be condemned when they are put on trial. | 33The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. |
Put your hope in the LORD. Travel steadily along his path. He will honor you by giving you the land. You will see the wicked destroyed. | 34Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. |
I have seen wicked and ruthless people flourishing like a tree in its native soil. | 35I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. |
But when I looked again, they were gone! Though I searched for them, I could not find them! | 36Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. |
Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace. | 37Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. |
But the rebellious will be destroyed; they have no future. | 38But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off. |
The LORD rescues the godly; he is their fortress in times of trouble. | 39But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. |
The LORD helps them, rescuing them from the wicked. He saves them, and they find shelter in him. | 40And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. |
