New Living Translation | King James Bible |
O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage! | 1A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance. O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. |
Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me. | 2For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. |
Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins. | 3There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. |
My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear. | 4For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. |
My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins. | 5My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. |
I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. | 6I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. |
A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken. | 7For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. |
I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart. | 8I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. |
You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh. | 9Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. |
My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind. | 10My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. |
My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance. | 11My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. |
Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery. | 12They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. |
But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak. | 13But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. |
I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply. | 14Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. |
For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O Lord my God. | 15For in thee, O LORD, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God. |
I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.” | 16For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me. |
I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain. | 17For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. |
But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done. | 18For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. |
I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason. | 19But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied. |
They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good. | 20They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is. |
Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God. | 21Forsake me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far from me. |
Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior. | 22Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation. |
