| 1Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again. | 1Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them. |
| 2The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him. | 2Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" |
| 3And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” | 3"What did Moses command you?" he replied. |
| 4They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.” | 4They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away." |
| 5And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. | 5"It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. |

| 13Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. | 13People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. |
| 14But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. | 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. |
| 15Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” | 15Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." |
| 16And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them. | 16And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. |
| 17Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” | 17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" |
| 18So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. | 18"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. |
| 19You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ” | 19You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.'" |
| 20And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” | 20"Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy." |
| 21Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” | 21Jesus looked at him and loved him. | 23Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” | 23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" |
| 24And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! | 24The disciples were amazed at his words. | 29So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, | 29"Truly I tell you," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel |
| 30who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. | 30will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--along with persecutions--and in the age to come eternal life. |
| 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” | 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first." |
| 32Now they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed. And as they followed they were afraid. Then He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them the things that would happen to Him: | 32They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. |
| 33“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles; | 33"We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, |
| 34and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.” | 34who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise." |
| 35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” | 35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask." |

| 38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” | 38"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. | 39They said to Him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; | 39"We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, |
| 40but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.” | 40but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared." |
| 41And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. | 41When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. |
| 42But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. | 42Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. |
| 43Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. | 43Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, |
| 44And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. | 44and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. |
| 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” | 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." |
| 46Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. | 46Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means "son of Timaeus"), was sitting by the roadside begging. |
| 47And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” | 47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" |

| 50And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. | 50Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. |
| 51So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.” | 51"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see." |
| 52Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road. | 52"Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. |
