Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, | 1When they came near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples on ahead and |
saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. | 2told them, "Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied up and a colt with it. Untie them, and bring them to me. |
And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” | 3If anyone says anything to you, tell him, 'The Lord needs them,' and that person will send them at once." |
All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: | 4Now this happened to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet when he said, |
“Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” | 5"Tell the daughter of Zion, 'Look, your king is coming to you! He is humble and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt of a donkey.'" |
So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. | 6So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. |
They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. | 7They brought the donkey and the colt and put their coats on them, and he sat upon them. |
And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. | 8Many people in the crowd spread their own coats on the road, while others began cutting down branches from the trees and spreading them on the road. |
Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!” | 9Both the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed him kept shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! How blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" |
And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” | 10When he came into Jerusalem, the whole city was trembling with excitement. The people were asking, "Who is this?" |
So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.” | 11The crowds kept saying, "This is the prophet Jesus, the man from Nazareth in Galilee." |
Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. | 12Then Jesus went into the Temple, threw out everyone who was selling and buying in the Temple, and overturned the moneychangers' tables and the chairs of those who sold doves. |
And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ” | 13He told them, "It is written, 'My house is to be called a house of prayer,' but you are turning it into a hideout for bandits!" |
Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. | 14Blind and lame people came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. |
But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant | 15But when the high priests and the scribes saw the amazing things that he had done and the children shouting in the Temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became furious |
and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise’?” | 16and asked him, "Do you hear what these people are saying?" Jesus told them, "Yes! Haven't you ever read, 'From the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have created praise'?" |
Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and He lodged there. | 17Then he left them and went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there. |
Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry. | 18In the morning, as Jesus was returning to the city, he became hungry. |
And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.” Immediately the fig tree withered away. | 19Seeing a fig tree by the roadside, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. He told it, "May fruit never come from you again!" And immediately the fig tree dried up. |
And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither away so soon?” | 20When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree dry up so quickly?" they asked. |
So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. | 21Jesus answered them, "I tell all of you with certainty, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you be able to do what has been done to the fig tree, but you will also say to this mountain, 'Be removed and thrown into the sea,' and it will happen. |
And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” | 22You will receive whatever you ask for in prayer, if you believe." |
Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” | 23Then Jesus went into the Temple. While he was teaching, the high priests and the elders of the people came to him and asked, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" |
But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things: | 24Jesus answered them, "I, too, will ask you one question. If you answer it for me, I will also tell you by what authority I am doing these things. |
The baptism of John—where was it from? From heaven or from men?” And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ | 25Where did John's authority to baptize come from? From heaven or from humans?" They began discussing this among themselves: "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' |
But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet.” | 26But if we say, 'From humans,' we are afraid of the crowd, because everyone regards John as a prophet." |
So they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.” And He said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. | 27So they told Jesus, "We don't know." He in turn told them, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I am doing these things." |
“But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go, work today in my vineyard.’ | 28"But what do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' |
He answered and said, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it and went. | 29His son replied, 'I don't want to,' but later he changed his mind and went. |
Then he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not go. | 30Then the father went to the other son and told him the same thing. He replied, 'I will, sir,' but he didn't go. |
Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to Him, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. | 31Which of the two did the father's will?" They answered, "The first one." Jesus told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, tax collectors and prostitutes will get into God's kingdom ahead of you! |
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not afterward relent and believe him. | 32John came to you living a righteous life, and you didn't believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. But even when you saw that, you didn't change your minds at last and believe him." |
“Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. | 33"Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a wall around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went abroad. |
Now when vintage-time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. | 34When harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenant farmers to collect his produce. |
And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. | 35But the farmers took his servants and beat one, killed another, and attacked another with stones. |
Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. | 36Again, he sent other servants to them, a greater number than the first, but the tenant farmers treated them the same way. |
Then last of all he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ | 37Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.' |
But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ | 38But when the tenant farmers saw his son, they told one another, 'This is the heir. Come on, let's kill him and get his inheritance!' |
So they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. | 39So they grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. |
“Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?” | 40Now when the owner of the vineyard returns, what will he do to those farmers?" |
They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.” | 41They told him, "He will put those horrible men to a horrible death. Then he will lease the vineyard to other farmers who will give him his produce at harvest time." |
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’? | 42Jesus asked them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures, 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes.'? |
“Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. | 43That is why I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce fruit for it. |
And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” | 44The person who falls over this stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush anyone on whom it falls." |
Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. | 45When the high priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was talking about them. |
But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet. | 46Although they wanted to arrest him, they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be a prophet. |
