Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John1Now when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John—
(though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),2although it was not Jesus who did the baptizing but his disciples—
He left Judea and departed again to Galilee.3he left Judea and went back to Galilee.
But He needed to go through Samaria.4Now it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.
So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.5So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the piece of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.6Jacob's Well was also there, and Jesus, tired out by the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”7A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus told her, "Please give me a drink,"
For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.8since his disciples had gone off into town to buy food.
Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.9The Samaritan woman asked him, "How can you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" Because Jews do not have anything to do with Samaritans.
Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, 'Please give me a drink,' you would have been the one to ask him, and he would have given you living water."
The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?11The woman told him, "Sir, you don't have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this living water?
Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”12You're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it, along with his sons and his flocks, are you?"
Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,13Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks this water will become thirsty again.
but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”14But whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never become thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become a well of water for him, springing up to eternal life."
The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”15The woman told him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I won't get thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”16He told her, "Go and call your husband, and come back here."
The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’17The woman answered him, "I don't have a husband." Jesus told her, "You are quite right in saying, 'I don't have a husband,'
for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”18because you have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."
The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.19The woman told him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet!
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”20Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain. But you Jews say that the place where people should worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.21Jesus told her, "Believe me, dear lady, the hour is coming when you Samaritans will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.22You don't know what you're worshiping. We Jews know what we're worshiping, because salvation comes from the Jews.
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.23Yet the time is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Indeed, the Father is looking for people like that to worship him.
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”25The woman told him, "I know that the Anointed One is coming, who is being called 'the Messiah'. When that person comes, he will explain everything."
Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.26"I am he," Jesus replied, "the one who is speaking to you."
And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”27At this point his disciples arrived, and they were astonished that he was talking to a woman. Yet no one said, "What do you want from her?" or, "Why are you talking to her?"
The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men,28Then the woman left her water jar and went back to town. She told people,
“Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”29"Come, see a man who told me everything I've ever done! Could he possibly be the Messiah?"
Then they went out of the city and came to Him.30The people left the town and started on their way to him.
In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”31Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, have something to eat."
But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”32But he told them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”33So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one has brought him anything to eat, have they?"
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.34Jesus told them, "My food is doing the will of the one who sent me and completing his work.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!35You say, don't you, 'In four more months the harvest will begin?' Look, I tell you, open your eyes and observe that the fields are ready for harvesting now!
And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.36The one who harvests is already receiving his wages and gathering a crop for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who harvests may rejoice together.
For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’37In this respect the saying is true: 'One person sows, and another person harvests.'
I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”38I have sent you to harvest what you have not worked for. Others have worked, and you have adopted their work as your own."
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”39Now many of the Samaritans of that town believed in Jesus because the woman had testified, "He told me everything I've ever done."
So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.40So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there for two days.
And many more believed because of His own word.41And many more believed because of what he said.
Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”42They kept telling the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, because now we have heard him ourselves, and we know that he really is the Savior of the world."
Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee.43Two days later, Jesus left for Galilee from there,
For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.44since Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also had gone to the feast.45When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen everything that he had done in Jerusalem during the festival and because they, too, had gone to the festival.
So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.46So Jesus returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Meanwhile, in Capernaum there was a government official whose son was ill.
When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.47When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him repeatedly to come down and heal his son, because he was about to die.
Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”48Jesus told him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe."
The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!”49The official told him, "Sir, please come down before my little boy dies."
Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.50Jesus told him, "Go home. Your son will live." The man believed what Jesus told him and started back home.
And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!”51While he was on his way, his servants met him and told him that his child was alive.
Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”52So he asked them at what hour he had begun to recover, and they told him, "The fever left him yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon."
So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.53Then the father realized that this was the very hour when Jesus had told him, "Your son will live." So he himself believed, along with his whole family.
This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.54Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.
