Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it.1Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town.
Now a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.2There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich.
He was trying to get a look at Jesus, but being a short man he could not see over the crowd.3He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd.
So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, because Jesus was going to pass that way.4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.
And when Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, because I must stay at your house today."5When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
So he came down quickly and welcomed Jesus joyfully.6Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy.
And when the people saw it, they all complained, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."7But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, half of my possessions I now give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!"8Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this household, because he too is a son of Abraham!9Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Parable of the Ten Servants
While the people were listening to these things, Jesus proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.11The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.
Therefore he said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.12He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return.
And he summoned ten of his slaves, gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Do business with these until I come back.'13 Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’
But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to be king over us!'14 But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’
When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned these slaves to whom he had given the money. He wanted to know how much they had earned by trading.15 “After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were.
So the first one came before him and said, 'Sir, your mina has made ten minas more.'16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’
And the king said to him, 'Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you will have authority over ten cities.'17 “‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’
Then the second one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has made five minas.'18 “The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’
So the king said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.'19 “‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’
Then another slave came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina that I put away for safekeeping in a piece of cloth.20 “But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.
For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.'21 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’
The king said to him, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! So you knew, did you, that I was a severe man, withdrawing what I didn't deposit and reaping what I didn't sow?22 “‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant,
Why then didn't you put my money in the bank, so that when I returned I could have collected it with interest?'23 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’
And he said to his attendants, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten.'24 “Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’
But they said to him, 'Sir, he has ten minas already!'25 “‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’
I tell you that everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.26 “‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.
But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, bring them here and slaughter them in front of me!'" 27 And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’” Jesus’ Triumphant Entry
After Jesus had said this, he continued on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples.
Now when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,29As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead.
telling them, "Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say, 'The Lord needs it.'"31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
So those who were sent ahead found it exactly as he had told them.32So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said.
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying that colt?"33And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”
They replied, "The Lord needs it."34And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.”
Then they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and had Jesus get on it.35So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on.
As he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.36As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him.
As he approached the road leading down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen:37When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"38“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”
But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."39But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”
He answered, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the very stones will cry out!" 40He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
Now when Jesus approached and saw the city, he wept over it,41But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.
saying, "If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side.43 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side.
They will demolish you--you and your children within your walls--and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God." 44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you. ” Jesus Clears the Temple
Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling things there,45Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices.
saying to them, "It is written, 'My house will be a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of robbers!" 46He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”
Jesus was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate him,47After that, he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him.
but they could not find a way to do it, for all the people hung on his words. 48But they could think of nothing, because all the people hung on every word he said.
