For the choir director. Of the servant of the LORD, David, who spoke the words of this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: I love You, LORD, my strength. | 1For the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD. He sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: I love you, LORD, my strength. |
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my mountain where I seek refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. | 2The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. |
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies. | 3I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. |
The ropes of death were wrapped around me; the torrents of destruction terrified me. | 4The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. |
The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. | 5The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. |
I called to the LORD in my distress, and I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry to Him reached His ears. | 6In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. |
Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the mountains trembled; they shook because He burned with anger. | 7The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. |
Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. | 8Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. |
He parted the heavens and came down, a dark cloud beneath His feet. | 9He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. |
He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. | 10He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness His hiding place, dark storm clouds His canopy around Him. | 11He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him-- the dark rain clouds of the sky. |
From the radiance of His presence, His clouds swept onward with hail and blazing coals. | 12Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High projected His voice. | 13The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. |
He shot His arrows and scattered them; He hurled lightning bolts and routed them. | 14He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them. |
The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed, at Your rebuke, LORD, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. | 15The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, LORD, at the blast of breath from your nostrils. |
He reached down from heaven and took hold of me; He pulled me out of deep waters. | 16He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. | 17He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in the day of my distress, but the LORD was my support. | 18They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. |
He brought me out to a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me. | 19He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. |
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; He repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. | 20The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned from my God to wickedness. | 21For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God. |
Indeed, I have kept all His ordinances in mind and have not disregarded His statutes. | 22All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. |
I was blameless toward Him and kept myself from sinning. | 23I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. |
So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight. | 24The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight. |
With the faithful You prove Yourself faithful; with the blameless man You prove Yourself blameless; | 25To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, |
with the pure You prove Yourself pure, but with the crooked You prove Yourself shrewd. | 26to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. |
For You rescue an afflicted people, but You humble those with haughty eyes. | 27You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty. |
LORD, You light my lamp; my God illuminates my darkness. | 28You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. |
With You I can attack a barrier, and with my God I can leap over a wall. | 29With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. |
God--His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. | 30As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD's word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. |
For who is God besides Yahweh? And who is a rock? Only our God. | 31For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? |
God--He clothes me with strength and makes my way perfect. | 32It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. |
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights. | 33He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. |
He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 34He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. |
You have given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand upholds me, and Your humility exalts me. | 35You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great. |
You widen a place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way. | 36You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. |
I pursue my enemies and overtake them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out. | 37I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. |
I crush them, and they cannot get up; they fall beneath my feet. | 38I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. |
You have clothed me with strength for battle; You subdue my adversaries beneath me. | 39You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. |
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hate me. | 40You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. |
They cry for help, but there is no one to save them-- they cry to the LORD, but He does not answer them. | 41They cried for help, but there was no one to save them-- to the LORD, but he did not answer. |
I pulverize them like dust before the wind; I trample them like mud in the streets. | 42I beat them as fine as windblown dust; I trampled them like mud in the streets. |
You have freed me from the feuds among the people; You have appointed me the head of nations; a people I had not known serve me. | 43You have delivered me from the attacks of the people; you have made me the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me, |
Foreigners submit to me grudgingly; as soon as they hear, they obey me. | 44foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me. |
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications. | 45They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. |
The LORD lives--may my rock be praised! The God of my salvation is exalted. | 46The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior! |
God--He gives me vengeance and subdues peoples under me. | 47He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me, |
He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; You rescue me from violent men. | 48who saves me from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me. |
Therefore I will praise You, Yahweh, among the nations; I will sing about Your name. | 49Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name. |
He gives great victories to His king; He shows loyalty to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever. | 50He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing love to his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever. |
