Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.1Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν Ἰησοῦς τοὺς λόγους τούτους μετῆρεν ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια τῆς Ἰουδαίας πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου
And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.2καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοί καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ
And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?”3Καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Φαρισαῖοι πειράζοντες αὐτὸν καὶ λέγοντες Εἰ ἔξεστιν ‹ἀνθρώπῳ› ἀπολῦσαι τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ κατὰ πᾶσαν αἰτίαν
He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,4 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ὅτι κτίσας ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς Ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἐποίησεν αὐτοὺς
and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?5καὶ εἶπεν Ἕνεκα τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ κολληθήσεται τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν
So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”6ὥστε οὐκέτι εἰσὶν δύο ἀλλὰ σὰρξ μία οὖν Θεὸς συνέζευξεν ἄνθρωπος μὴ χωριζέτω
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?”7Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν Μωϋσῆς ἐνετείλατο δοῦναι βιβλίον ἀποστασίου καὶ ἀπολῦσαι ‹αὐτήν›
He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.8Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὅτι Μωϋσῆς πρὸς τὴν σκληροκαρδίαν ὑμῶν ἐπέτρεψεν ὑμῖν ἀπολῦσαι τὰς γυναῖκας ὑμῶν ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς δὲ οὐ γέγονεν οὕτως
And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”9λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ μὴ ἐπὶ πορνείᾳ καὶ γαμήσῃ ἄλλην μοιχᾶται ‹καὶ ἀπολελυμένην γαμήσας μοιχᾶται›
The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”10Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί [αὐτοῦ] Εἰ οὕτως ἐστὶν αἰτία τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μετὰ τῆς γυναικός οὐ συμφέρει γαμῆσαι
But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given.11 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐ πάντες χωροῦσιν τὸν λόγον τοῦτον ἀλλ’ οἷς δέδοται
For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”12εἰσὶν γὰρ εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς ἐγεννήθησαν οὕτως καὶ εἰσὶν εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες εὐνουχίσθησαν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ εἰσὶν εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες εὐνούχισαν ἑαυτοὺς διὰ τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν δυνάμενος χωρεῖν χωρείτω
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people,13Τότε προσηνέχθησαν αὐτῷ παιδία ἵνα τὰς χεῖρας ἐπιθῇ αὐτοῖς καὶ προσεύξηται οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἐπετίμησαν αὐτοῖς
but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”14 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία καὶ μὴ κωλύετε αὐτὰ ἐλθεῖν πρός με τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
And he laid his hands on them and went away.15καὶ ἐπιθεὶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς ἐπορεύθη ἐκεῖθεν
And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”16Καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς προσελθὼν αὐτῷ εἶπεν Διδάσκαλε τί ἀγαθὸν ποιήσω ἵνα σχῶ ζωὴν αἰώνιον
And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”17 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί με ἐρωτᾷς περὶ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ εἷς ἐστιν ἀγαθός εἰ δὲ θέλεις εἰς τὴν ζωὴν εἰσελθεῖν τήρησον* τὰς ἐντολάς
He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,18Λέγει αὐτῷ Ποίας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν* Τὸ Οὐ φονεύσεις Οὐ μοιχεύσεις Οὐ κλέψεις Οὐ ψευδομαρτυρήσεις
Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”19Τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν
The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?”20Λέγει αὐτῷ νεανίσκος Ταῦτα πάντα ἐφύλαξα τί ἔτι ὑστερῶ
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”21Ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ θέλεις τέλειος εἶναι ὕπαγε πώλησόν σου τὰ ὑπάρχοντα καὶ δὸς [τοῖς] πτωχοῖς καὶ ἕξεις θησαυρὸν ἐν οὐρανοῖς καὶ δεῦρο ἀκολούθει μοι
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.22Ἀκούσας δὲ νεανίσκος τὸν λόγον (τοῦτον) ἀπῆλθεν λυπούμενος ἦν γὰρ ἔχων κτήματα πολλά
And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven.23 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πλούσιος δυσκόλως εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”24πάλιν δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν εὐκοπώτερόν ἐστιν κάμηλον διὰ τρυπήματος ῥαφίδος εἰσελθεῖν πλούσιον [εἰσελθεῖν] εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”25Ἀκούσαντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο σφόδρα λέγοντες Τίς ἄρα δύναται σωθῆναι
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”26Ἐμβλέψας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Παρὰ ἀνθρώποις τοῦτο ἀδύνατόν ἐστιν παρὰ δὲ Θεῷ πάντα δυνατά
Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?”27Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν πάντα καὶ ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι τί ἄρα ἔσται ἡμῖν
Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.28 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ὑμεῖς οἱ ἀκολουθήσαντές μοι ἐν τῇ παλινγενεσίᾳ ὅταν καθίσῃ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ θρόνου δόξης αὐτοῦ καθήσεσθε καὶ ὑμεῖς* ἐπὶ δώδεκα θρόνους κρίνοντες τὰς δώδεκα φυλὰς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.29καὶ πᾶς ὅστις ἀφῆκεν οἰκίας ἀδελφοὺς ἀδελφὰς πατέρα μητέρα ‹ἢ γυναῖκα› τέκνα ἀγροὺς ἕνεκεν τοῦ μου* ὀνόματός ἑκατονταπλασίονα* λήμψεται καὶ ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσει
But many who are first will be last, and the last first.30Πολλοὶ δὲ ἔσονται πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι καὶ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι
