Pay attention, heavens, and I will speak; listen, earth, to the words from my mouth. | 1“Listen, O heavens, and I will speak! Hear, O earth, the words that I say! |
Let my teaching fall like rain and my word settle like dew, like gentle rain on new grass and showers on tender plants. | 2Let my teaching fall on you like rain; let my speech settle like dew. Let my words fall like rain on tender grass, like gentle showers on young plants. |
For I will proclaim the LORD's name. Declare the greatness of our God! | 3I will proclaim the name of the LORD; how glorious is our God! |
The Rock--his work is perfect; all his ways are just. A faithful God, without bias, he is righteous and true. | 4He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is! |
His people have acted corruptly toward him; this is their defect--they are not his children but a devious and crooked generation. | 5“But they have acted corruptly toward him; when they act so perversely, are they really his children? They are a deceitful and twisted generation. |
Is this how you repay the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Isn't he your Father and Creator? Didn't he make you and sustain you? | 6Is this the way you repay the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Isn’t he your Father who created you? Has he not made you and established you? |
Remember the days of old; consider the years of past generations. Ask your father, and he will tell you, your elders, and they will teach you. | 7Remember the days of long ago; think about the generations past. Ask your father, and he will inform you. Inquire of your elders, and they will tell you. |
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance and divided the human race, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the people of Israel. | 8When the Most High assigned lands to the nations, when he divided up the human race, he established the boundaries of the peoples according to the number in his heavenly court. |
But the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob, his own inheritance. | 9“For the people of Israel belong to the LORD; Jacob is his special possession. |
He found him in a desolate land, in a barren, howling wilderness; he surrounded him, cared for him, and protected him as the pupil of his eye. | 10He found them in a desert land, in an empty, howling wasteland. He surrounded them and watched over them; he guarded them as he would guard his own eyes. |
He watches over his nest like an eagle and hovers over his young; he spreads his wings, catches him, and carries him on his feathers. | 11Like an eagle that rouses her chicks and hovers over her young, so he spread his wings to take them up and carried them safely on his pinions. |
The LORD alone led him, with no help from a foreign god. | 12The LORD alone guided them; they followed no foreign gods. |
He made him ride on the heights of the land and eat the produce of the field. He nourished him with honey from the rock and oil from flinty rock, | 13He let them ride over the highlands and feast on the crops of the fields. He nourished them with honey from the rock and olive oil from the stony ground. |
curds from the herd and milk from the flock, with the fat of lambs, rams from Bashan, and goats, with the choicest grains of wheat; you drank wine from the finest grapes. | 14He fed them yogurt from the herd and milk from the flock, together with the fat of lambs. He gave them choice rams from Bashan, and goats, together with the choicest wheat. You drank the finest wine, made from the juice of grapes. |
Then Jeshurun became fat and rebelled--you became fat, bloated, and gorged. He abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation. | 15“But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation. |
They provoked his jealousy with different gods; they enraged him with detestable practices. | 16They stirred up his jealousy by worshiping foreign gods; they provoked his fury with detestable deeds. |
They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known, new gods that had just arrived, which your fathers did not fear. | 17They offered sacrifices to demons, which are not God, to gods they had not known before, to new gods only recently arrived, to gods their ancestors had never feared. |
You ignored the Rock who gave you birth; you forgot the God who gave birth to you. | 18You neglected the Rock who had fathered you; you forgot the God who had given you birth. |
When the LORD saw this, he despised them, angered by his sons and daughters. | 19“The LORD saw this and drew back, provoked to anger by his own sons and daughters. |
He said: "I will hide my face from them; I will see what will become of them, for they are a perverse generation--unfaithful children. | 20He said, ‘I will abandon them; then see what becomes of them. For they are a twisted generation, children without integrity. |
They have provoked my jealousy with what is not a god; they have enraged me with their worthless idols. So I will provoke their jealousy with what is not a people; I will enrage them with a foolish nation. | 21They have roused my jealousy by worshiping things that are not God; they have provoked my anger with their useless idols. Now I will rouse their jealousy through people who are not even a people; I will provoke their anger through the foolish Gentiles. |
For fire has been kindled because of my anger and burns to the depths of Sheol; it devours the land and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains. | 22For my anger blazes forth like fire and burns to the depths of the grave. It devours the earth and all its crops and ignites the foundations of the mountains. |
"I will pile disasters on them; I will use up my arrows against them. | 23I will heap disasters upon them and shoot them down with my arrows. |
They will be weak from hunger, ravaged by pestilence and bitter plague; I will unleash on them wild beasts with fangs, as well as venomous snakes that slither in the dust. | 24I will weaken them with famine, burning fever, and deadly disease. I will send the fangs of wild beasts and poisonous snakes that glide in the dust. |
Outside, the sword will take their children, and inside, there will be terror; the young man and the young woman will be killed, the infant and the gray-haired man. | 25Outside, the sword will bring death, and inside, terror will strike both young men and young women, both infants and the aged. |
"I would have said: I will cut them to pieces and blot out the memory of them from mankind, | 26I would have annihilated them, wiping out even the memory of them. |
if I had not feared provocation from the enemy, or feared that these foes might misunderstand and say: 'Our own hand has prevailed; it wasn't the LORD who did all this.'" | 27But I feared the taunt of Israel’s enemy, who might misunderstand and say, “Our own power has triumphed! The LORD had nothing to do with this!”’ |
Israel is a nation lacking sense with no understanding at all. | 28“But Israel is a senseless nation; the people are foolish, without understanding. |
If only they were wise, they would comprehend this; they would understand their fate. | 29Oh, that they were wise and could understand this! Oh, that they might know their fate! |
How could one pursue a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? | 30How could one person chase a thousand of them, and two people put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? |
But their "rock" is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede. | 31But the rock of our enemies is not like our Rock, as even they recognize. |
For their vine is from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poisonous; their clusters are bitter. | 32Their vine grows from the vine of Sodom, from the vineyards of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poison, and their clusters are bitter. |
Their wine is serpents' venom, the deadly poison of cobras. | 33Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras. |
"Is it not stored up with me, sealed up in my vaults? | 34“The LORD says, ‘Am I not storing up these things, sealing them away in my treasury? |
Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay. In time their foot will slip, for their day of disaster is near, and their doom is coming quickly." | 35I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’ |
The LORD will indeed vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants when he sees that their strength is gone and no one is left--slave or free. | 36“Indeed, the LORD will give justice to his people, and he will change his mind about his servants, when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free. |
He will say: "Where are their gods, the 'rock' they found refuge in? | 37Then he will ask, ‘Where are their gods, the rocks they fled to for refuge? |
Who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you; let it be a shelter for you. | 38Where now are those gods, who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their offerings? Let those gods arise and help you! Let them provide you with shelter! |
See now that I alone am he; there is no God but me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I heal. No one can rescue anyone from my power. | 39Look now; I myself am he! There is no other god but me! I am the one who kills and gives life; I am the one who wounds and heals; no one can be rescued from my powerful hand! |
I raise my hand to heaven and declare: As surely as I live forever, | 40Now I raise my hand to heaven and declare, “As surely as I live, |
when I sharpen my flashing sword, and my hand takes hold of judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me. | 41when I sharpen my flashing sword and begin to carry out justice, I will take revenge on my enemies and repay those who reject me. |
I will make my arrows drunk with blood while my sword devours flesh--the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders." | 42I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword will devour flesh— the blood of the slaughtered and the captives, and the heads of the enemy leaders.”’ |
Rejoice, you nations, concerning his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants. He will take vengeance on his adversaries; he will purify his land and his people. | 43“Rejoice with him, you heavens, and let all of God’s angels worship him. Rejoice with his people, you Gentiles, and let all the angels be strengthened in him. For he will avenge the blood of his children ; he will take revenge against his enemies. He will repay those who hate him and cleanse his people’s land.” |
Moses came with Joshua son of Nun and recited all the words of this song in the presence of the people. | 44So Moses came with Joshua son of Nun and recited all the words of this song to the people. |
After Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, | 45When Moses had finished reciting all these words to the people of Israel, |
he said to them, "Take to heart all these words I am giving as a warning to you today, so that you may command your children to follow all the words of this law carefully. | 46he added: “Take to heart all the words of warning I have given you today. Pass them on as a command to your children so they will obey every word of these instructions. |
For they are not meaningless words to you but they are your life, and by them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess." | 47These instructions are not empty words—they are your life! By obeying them you will enjoy a long life in the land you will occupy when you cross the Jordan River.” Moses’ Death Foretold |
On that same day the LORD spoke to Moses, | 48That same day the LORD said to Moses, |
"Go up Mount Nebo in the Abarim range in the land of Moab, across from Jericho, and view the land of Canaan I am giving the Israelites as a possession. | 49“Go to Moab, to the mountains east of the river, and climb Mount Nebo, which is across from Jericho. Look out across the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the people of Israel as their own special possession. |
Then you will die on the mountain that you go up, and you will be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people. | 50Then you will die there on the mountain. You will join your ancestors, just as Aaron, your brother, died on Mount Hor and joined his ancestors. |
For both of you broke faith with me among the Israelites at the Waters of Meribath-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin by failing to treat me as holy in their presence. | 51For both of you betrayed me with the Israelites at the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. You failed to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel there. |
Although from a distance you will view the land that I am giving the Israelites, you will not go there." | 52So you will see the land from a distance, but you may not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel.” |
