When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John1Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John
(although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),2(though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did).
He left Judea and returned to Galilee.3So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.
Now He had to pass through Samaria.4He had to go through Samaria on the way.
So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.5Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.6Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”7Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”
(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)8He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
“You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)9The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”10Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
“Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?11“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?
Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”12And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.13Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again.
But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”15“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”
Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”16 “Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.
“I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.17“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband—
In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”18 for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”
“Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.19“Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem.”20So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”
“Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.21Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.22 You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.
But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.
God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”25The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”26Then Jesus told her, “ I Am the Messiah!”
Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”27Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”
Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,28The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone,
“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”29“Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”
So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.30So the people came streaming from the village to see him.
Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”31Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.”
But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”32But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.”
So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”33“Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other.
Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.34Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.
Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!
For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.37 You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true.
I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”38 I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.” Many Samaritans Believe
Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”39Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!”
So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.40When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days,
And many more believed because of His message.41long enough for many more to hear his message and believe.
They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”42Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.” Jesus Heals an Official’s Son
After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.43At the end of the two days, Jesus went on to Galilee.
Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.44He himself had said that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown.
Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all the great things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they had gone there as well.45Yet the Galileans welcomed him, for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and had seen everything he did there.
So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.46As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.
Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”48Jesus asked, “Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?”
“Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”49The official pleaded, “Lord, please come now before my little boy dies.”
“Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed.50Then Jesus told him, “Go back home. Your son will live!” And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.
And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.51While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well.
So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”52He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they replied, “Yesterday afternoon at one o’clock his fever suddenly disappeared!”
Then the father realized that this was the very hour in which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and all his household believed.53Then the father realized that that was the very time Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and his entire household believed in Jesus.
This was now the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.54This was the second miraculous sign Jesus did in Galilee after coming from Judea.
