For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD, who sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: I love You, O LORD, my strength. | 1For the music director; by the LORD's servant David, who sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. He said: "I love you, LORD, my source of strength! |
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. | 2The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge. |
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. | 3I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. |
The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me. | 4The waves of death engulfed me, the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. |
The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. | 5The ropes of Sheol tightened around me, the snares of death trapped me. |
In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for His help reached His ears. | 6In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried out to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. |
Then the earth shook and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains trembled; they were shaken because He burned with anger. | 7The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry. |
Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; glowing coals blazed forth. | 8Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. |
He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet. | 9He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. |
He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. | 10He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a canopy around Him. | 11He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. |
From the brightness of His presence His clouds advanced—hailstones and coals of fire. | 12From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded—hailstones and coals of fire. | 13The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted. |
He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them. | 14He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them. |
The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed, at Your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. | 15The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose. |
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. | 16He reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me from the surging water. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me. | 17He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support. | 18They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. |
He brought me out into the open; He rescued me because He delighted in me. | 19He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. |
The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. | 20The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God. | 21For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. |
For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes. | 22For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. |
And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity. | 23I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning. |
So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight. | 24The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. |
To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless; | 25You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. |
to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd. | 26You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. |
For You save an afflicted people, but You humble those with haughty eyes. | 27For you deliver oppressed people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. |
For You, O LORD, light my lamp; my God lights up my darkness. | 28Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. My God illuminates the darkness around me. |
For in You I can charge an army, and with my God I can scale a wall. | 29Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. |
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. | 30The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. |
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? | 31Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? |
It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way clear. | 32The one true God gives me strength; he removes the obstacles in my way. |
He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights. | 33He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. |
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 34He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. |
You have given me Your shield of salvation; Your right hand upholds me, and Your gentleness exalts me. | 35You give me your protective shield; your right hand supports me; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. |
You broaden the path beneath me so that my ankles do not give way. | 36You widen my path; my feet do not slip. |
I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back until they were consumed. | 37I chase my enemies and catch them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. |
I crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet. | 38I beat them to death; they fall at my feet. |
You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me. | 39You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. |
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who hated me. | 40You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. |
They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—to the LORD, but He did not answer. | 41They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. |
I ground them as dust in the face of the wind; I trampled them like mud in the streets. | 42I grind them as fine windblown dust; I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets. |
You have delivered me from the strife of the people; You have made me the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me. | 43You rescue me from a hostile army; you make me a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. |
When they hear me, they obey me; foreigners cower before me. | 44When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. Foreigners are powerless before me; |
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds. | 45foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. |
The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may the God of my salvation be exalted— | 46The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! |
the God who avenges me and subdues nations beneath me, | 47The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. |
who delivers me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes; You rescue me from violent men. | 48He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. |
Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name. | 49So I will give you thanks before the nations, O LORD! I will sing praises to you! |
Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever. | 50He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever." |
