The Poor Widow's Offering
(Mark 12:41-44)
1Ἀναβλέψας (Having looked up) δὲ (now), εἶδεν (He saw) τοὺς (the ones) βάλλοντας (casting) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) γαζοφυλάκιον (treasury) τὰ (the) δῶρα (gifts) αὐτῶν (of them) πλουσίους (rich).
2εἶδεν (He saw) δέ (then) τινα (a certain) χήραν (widow) πενιχρὰν (poor) βάλλουσαν (casting) ἐκεῖ (in) λεπτὰ (lepta) δύο (two).a
3Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἀληθῶς (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) χήρα (widow) αὕτη (this) ⇔ «ἡ (-) πτωχὴ» (poor), πλεῖον (more) πάντων (than all) ἔβαλεν (has cast in);
4πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) οὗτοι (these) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (that which) περισσεύοντος (was abounding) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἔβαλον (cast) εἰς (in) τὰ (the) δῶρα (gifts); αὕτη (she) δὲ (however), ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ὑστερήματος (poverty) αὐτῆς (of her), πάντα (all) τὸν (the) βίον (livelihood) ὃν (that) εἶχεν (she had) ἔβαλεν (did cast).”
Temple Destruction Foretold
(Matthew 24:1-4; Mark 13:1-9)
5Καί (And) τινων (as some) λεγόντων (were speaking) περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple), ὅτι (that) λίθοις (with stones) καλοῖς (goodly) καὶ (and) ἀναθήμασιν (consecrated gifts) κεκόσμηται (it was adorned), εἶπεν (He said),
6“Ταῦτα (As to these things) ἃ (which) θεωρεῖτε (you are beholding), ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἡμέραι (the days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) οὐκ (not) ἀφεθήσεται (will be left) λίθος (stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθῳ (stone) ὃς (which) οὐ (not) καταλυθήσεται (will be thrown down).”
7Ἐπηρώτησαν (They asked) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), πότε (when) οὖν (then) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be), καὶ (and) τί (what will be) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) ὅταν (when) μέλλῃ (are about) ταῦτα (these things) γίνεσθαι (to take place)?”
8Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Βλέπετε (Take heed), μὴ (lest) πλανηθῆτε (you be led astray); πολλοὶ (many) γὰρ (for) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He),’ καί (and) ‘Ὁ (The) καιρὸς (time) ἤγγικεν (is drawn near).’ μὴ (Not) πορευθῆτε (go) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτῶν (them).
9ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἀκούσητε (you should hear of) πολέμους (wars) καὶ (and) ἀκαταστασίας (commotions), μὴ (not) πτοηθῆτε (be terrified); δεῖ (it behooves) γὰρ (for) ταῦτα (these things) γενέσθαι (to take place) πρῶτον (first), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) εὐθέως (immediately is) τὸ (the) τέλος (end).”
Witnessing to All Nations
(Matthew 24:9-14; Mark 13:10-13)
10Τότε (Then) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγερθήσεται (Will rise up) ἔθνος (nation) ἐπ’ (against) ἔθνος (nation), καὶ (and) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἐπὶ (against) βασιλείαν (kingdom).
11σεισμοί (Earthquakes) τε (both) μεγάλοι (great), καὶ (and) κατὰ (in different) τόπους (places) λιμοὶ* (famines) καὶ (and) λοιμοὶ* (pestilences) ἔσονται (there will be); φόβητρά (fearful sights) τε (also) καὶ (and) «ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ» (heaven) ⇔ σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great) ἔσται (will there be).
12Πρὸ (Before) δὲ (however) τούτων (these things) πάντων (all), ἐπιβαλοῦσιν (they will lay) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) διώξουσιν (will persecute you), παραδιδόντες (delivering you) εἰς (to) τὰς (the) συναγωγὰς (synagogues) καὶ (and) φυλακάς (prisons), ἀπαγομένους (bringing you) ἐπὶ (before) βασιλεῖς (kings) καὶ (and) ἡγεμόνας (governors) ἕνεκεν (on account of) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματός (name) μου (of Me).
13ἀποβήσεται (It will result) ὑμῖν (to you) εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony).
14θέτε (Settle) οὖν (therefore) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (minds) ὑμῶν (of you) μὴ (not) προμελετᾶν (to premeditate) ἀπολογηθῆναι (to make a defense);
15ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) δώσω (will give) ὑμῖν (you) στόμα (a mouth) καὶ (and) σοφίαν (wisdom), ᾗ (which) οὐ (not) δυνήσονται (will be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to resist) ἢ (nor) ἀντειπεῖν (to reply to) ἅπαντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀντικείμενοι (opposing) ὑμῖν (you).
16Παραδοθήσεσθε (You will be betrayed) δὲ (then) καὶ (even) ὑπὸ (by) γονέων (parents) καὶ (and) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) καὶ (and) συγγενῶν (relatives) καὶ (and) φίλων (friends), καὶ (and) θανατώσουσιν (they will put to death) ἐξ (some from among) ὑμῶν (you).
17καὶ (And) ἔσεσθε (you will be) μισούμενοι (hated) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all) διὰ (because of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me).
18καὶ (But) θρὶξ (a hair) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) κεφαλῆς (head) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (should perish).
19ἐν (By) τῇ (the) ὑπομονῇ (patient endurance) ὑμῶν (of you), κτήσασθε* (you will gain) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you).
The Destruction of Jerusalem
(Matthew 24:15-25; Mark 13:14-23)
20Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἴδητε (you see) κυκλουμένην (being encircled) ὑπὸ (by) στρατοπέδων (encampments) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), τότε (then) γνῶτε (know) ὅτι (that) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near) ἡ (the) ἐρήμωσις (desolation) αὐτῆς (of her).
21τότε (Then) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea), φευγέτωσαν (let them flee) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὄρη (mountains); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (midst) αὐτῆς (of her), ἐκχωρείτωσαν (let them depart out); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) χώραις (countries), μὴ (not) εἰσερχέσθωσαν (let them enter) εἰς (into) αὐτήν (her);
22ὅτι (for) ἡμέραι (the days) ἐκδικήσεως (of avenging) αὗταί (these) εἰσιν (are), τοῦ (-) πλησθῆναι (to fulfill) πάντα (all things) τὰ (-) γεγραμμένα (having been written).
23Οὐαὶ (But woe) ταῖς (to those) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb) ἐχούσαις (having), καὶ (and) ταῖς (to the ones) θηλαζούσαις (nursing) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days); ἔσται (there will be) γὰρ (for) ἀνάγκη (distress) μεγάλη (great) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (land) καὶ (and) ὀργὴ (wrath) τῷ (to the) λαῷ (people) τούτῳ (this).
24καὶ (And) πεσοῦνται (they will fall) στόματι (by the edge) μαχαίρης (of the sword), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται (will be led captive) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations); πάντα (all) καὶ (and) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἔσται (will be) πατουμένη (trodden down) ὑπὸ (by) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) πληρωθῶσιν (are fulfilled) καιροὶ (the times) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles).
The Return of the Son of Man
(Matthew 24:26-31; Mark 13:24-27)
25Καὶ (And) ἔσονται (there will be) σημεῖα (signs) ἐν (in) ἡλίῳ (sun), καὶ (and) σελήνῃ (moon), καὶ (and) ἄστροις (stars); καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) συνοχὴ (distress) ἐθνῶν (of nations) ἐν (with) ἀπορίᾳ (perplexity), ἤχους (the roaring) θαλάσσης (of the sea) καὶ (and) σάλου (rolling surge),
26ἀποψυχόντων (fainting) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἀπὸ (from) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) προσδοκίας (expectation) τῶν (of that which) ἐπερχομένων (is coming) τῇ (on the) οἰκουμένῃ (earth); αἱ (-) γὰρ (for) δυνάμεις (the powers) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) σαλευθήσονται (will be shaken).
27καὶ (And) τότε (then) ὄψονται (will they see) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐν (in) νεφέλῃ (a cloud), μετὰ (with) δυνάμεως (power) καὶ (and) δόξης (glory) πολλῆς (great).
28ἀρχομένων (Beginning) δὲ (then) τούτων (of these things) γίνεσθαι (to come to pass), ἀνακύψατε (look up) καὶ (and) ἐπάρατε (lift up) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) ὑμῶν (of you), διότι (because) ἐγγίζει (draws near) ἡ (the) ἀπολύτρωσις (redemption) ὑμῶν (of you).”
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
(Matthew 24:32-35; Mark 13:28-31)
29Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He spoke) παραβολὴν (a parable) αὐτοῖς (to them): “Ἴδετε (Behold) τὴν (the) συκῆν (fig tree) καὶ (and) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) δένδρα (trees).
30ὅταν (When) προβάλωσιν (they sprout) ἤδη (already), βλέποντες (looking on them) ἀφ’ (for) ἑαυτῶν (yourselves), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἤδη (already) ἐγγὺς (near) τὸ (the) θέρος (summer) ἐστίν (is).
31οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), ὅταν (when) ἴδητε (you see) ταῦτα (these things) γινόμενα (coming to pass), γινώσκετε (know) ὅτι (that) ἐγγύς (near) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).
32ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθῃ (will have passed away) ἡ (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) πάντα (all these things) γένηται (shall have taken place).
33ὁ (The) οὐρανὸς (heaven) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) παρελεύσονται (will pass away), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) λόγοι (the words) μου (of Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρελεύσονται (will pass away).
Be Watchful for the Day
34Προσέχετε (Take heed) δὲ (now) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) βαρηθῶσιν (be burdened) ὑμῶν (of you) αἱ (the) καρδίαι (hearts) ἐν (with) κραιπάλῃ (dissipation) καὶ (and) μέθῃ (drunkenness) καὶ (and) μερίμναις (cares) βιωτικαῖς (of life) — καὶ (and) ἐπιστῇ (would come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) αἰφνίδιος (suddenly) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνη (that) ὡς (as) παγίς (a snare).
35ἐπεισελεύσεται (It will come) γὰρ (for) ἐπὶ (upon) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) καθημένους (sitting) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (the face) πάσης (of all) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).
36ἀγρυπνεῖτε (Watch) δὲ (also) ἐν (at) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season), δεόμενοι (praying) ἵνα (that) κατισχύσητε (you may have strength) ἐκφυγεῖν (to escape) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) μέλλοντα (are about) γίνεσθαι (to come to pass) καὶ (and) σταθῆναι (to stand) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).”
37Ἦν (He was) δὲ (now) τὰς (during the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) διδάσκων (teaching), τὰς (-) δὲ (and) νύκτας (the evening) ἐξερχόμενος (going out), ηὐλίζετο (He was lodging) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mount) τὸ (-) καλούμενον (called) Ἐλαιῶν (Olivet).
38καὶ (And) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ὤρθριζεν (would come early in the morning) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἀκούειν (to hear) αὐτοῦ (Him).
