1Then this message came to me from the LORD:

1This message came to me from the LORD:

2“Son of man, sing a funeral song for Tyre,

2"Son of Man, compose a mourning song for Tyre.

3that mighty gateway to the sea, the trading center of the world. Give Tyre this message from the Sovereign LORD: “You boasted, O Tyre, ‘My beauty is perfect!’

3Tell Tyre, who lives at the gateway to the Mediterranean Sea, who serves as the international merchant to many coastal districts: 'This is what the Lord GOD says: "Tyre, you've been claiming, "I am beauty perfected.'

4You extended your boundaries into the sea. Your builders made your beauty perfect.

4You've set your national boundary in international waters. Your builders made you downright beautiful!"'"

5You were like a great ship built of the finest cypress from Senir. They took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.

5They brought in a ship made with pine planking from Senir, configured with a mast carved from a cedar from Lebanon,

6They carved your oars from the oaks of Bashan. Your deck of pine from the coasts of Cyprus was inlaid with ivory.

6equipped with oars made from oaks from Bashan, with ivory-inlaid cypress wood decking imported from the coastlands of Cypress,

7Your sails were made of Egypt’s finest linen, and they flew as a banner above you. You stood beneath blue and purple awnings made bright with dyes from the coasts of Elishah.

7with sails made with embroidered Egyptian linen, festooned with blue banners, and with your sun shades made with purple cloth from Cypress.

8Your oarsmen came from Sidon and Arvad; your helmsmen were skilled men from Tyre itself.

8Your sailors were conscripted from Sidon and Arvad, and your officers served aboard as pilots.

9Wise old craftsmen from Gebal did the caulking. Ships from every land came with goods to barter for your trade.

9The wise men and elders from Gebal accompanied you, serving as ship's carpenters. All the maritime navies and their seaman also accompanied you to assist you in doing business internationally."

10“Men from distant Persia, Lydia, and Libya served in your great army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls, giving you great honor.

10"Soldiers from Persia, Lud, and Libya, served in your army. They were your mighty soldiers. Their helmets and shields adorned your barracks walls, and they won battle decorations for you.

11Men from Arvad and Helech stood on your walls. Your towers were manned by men from Gammad. Their shields hung on your walls, completing your beauty.

11Mercenaries from Arvad and Helech stood guard duty on your walls, while brave men manned your towers. They hung their shields all around your walls— just the right touch to perfect your interior decorating!"

12“Tarshish sent merchants to buy your wares in exchange for silver, iron, tin, and lead.

12Tarshish was your business partner because of your phenomenal wealth. They traded silver, iron, tin, and lead for your merchandise.

13Merchants from Greece, Tubal, and Meshech brought slaves and articles of bronze to trade with you.

13Greece, Tubal, and Meshech bartered with you, exchanging slaves and bronze vessels for your wares.

14“From Beth-togarmah came riding horses, chariot horses, and mules, all in exchange for your goods.

14Beth-togarmah traded horses, war horses, and mules in exchange for what you had to sell.

15Merchants came to you from Dedan. Numerous coastlands were your captive markets; they brought payment in ivory tusks and ebony wood.

15Men from the low country south of Edom and many of the coastlands were your markets for ivory tusks and ebony that they brought to trade with you.

16“Syria sent merchants to buy your rich variety of goods. They traded turquoise, purple dyes, embroidery, fine linen, and jewelry of coral and rubies.

16"Aram was one of your customers because you had so much merchandise. They paid by trading turquoise, purple yarn, embroidered goods, Egyptian linen, coral, and rubies.

17Judah and Israel traded for your wares, offering wheat from Minnith, figs, honey, olive oil, and balm.

17The territories of Judah and Israel were your clients, too. They traded wheat from their distribution centers, baked goods, honey, oil, and ointments for your merchandise.

18“Damascus sent merchants to buy your rich variety of goods, bringing wine from Helbon and white wool from Zahar.

18"Because you have so much to sell and are so rich, Damascus has been your trading partner, exchanging wine from Helbon, unbleached wool,

19Greeks from Uzal came to trade for your merchandise. Wrought iron, cassia, and fragrant calamus were bartered for your wares.

19and casks of wine from Izal for your wrought iron, cassia wood, and aromatic reeds.

20“Dedan sent merchants to trade their expensive saddle blankets with you.

20"Dedan traded with you, exchanging riding blankets.

21The Arabians and the princes of Kedar sent merchants to trade lambs and rams and male goats in exchange for your goods.

21Arabia, including all the princes of Kedar, came to you, shopping for lambs, rams, and goats.

22The merchants of Sheba and Raamah came with all kinds of spices, jewels, and gold in exchange for your wares.

22Traders from Sheba and Raamah paid for the best of what you had to offer with all types of spices, precious stones, and gold.

23“Haran, Canneh, Eden, Sheba, Asshur, and Kilmad came with their merchandise, too.

23Haran, Canneh, Eden, merchants from Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad did business with you,

24They brought choice fabrics to trade—blue cloth, embroidery, and multicolored carpets rolled up and bound with cords.

24trading garments made into the finest blue and embroidered mantels, and also multi-colored carpets, ropes, and other merchandise.

25The ships of Tarshish were your ocean caravans. Your island warehouse was filled to the brim! The Destruction of Tyre

25Ocean-going fleets carried your merchandise." "How filled you were! How glorious you were, at home in the heart of the sea!

26“But look! Your oarsmen have taken you into stormy seas! A mighty eastern gale has wrecked you in the heart of the sea!

26But your rowers have brought you into dangerous waters. The east wind has broken you in the heart of the ocean!

27Everything is lost— your riches and wares, your sailors and pilots, your ship builders, merchants, and warriors. On the day of your ruin, everyone on board sinks into the depths of the sea.

27Your wealth, your products, your merchandise your sailors, your pilots, your tailors, your salesmen, all your mercenaries with you— your entire company with you— will fall into the midst of the sea on the day when you're overthrown!

28Your cities by the sea tremble as your pilots cry out in terror.

28When your ships' captains cry out, the pasturelands along the coast will cry out!

29All the oarsmen abandon their ships; the sailors and pilots stand on the shore.

29Everyone who handles an oar will abandon ship, they'll head straight for dry land,

30They cry aloud over you and weep bitterly. They throw dust on their heads and roll in ashes.

30and they will cry so loud you won't be able to make yourself heard! How bitterly they'll cry! They'll throw dust on their heads and wallow in ashes.

31They shave their heads in grief for you and dress themselves in burlap. They weep for you with bitter anguish and deep mourning.

31They'll shave their heads bald because of you. They'll dress themselves in sackcloth and weep for you with deep bitterness of heart, with the most pitiful of mourning.

32As they wail and mourn over you, they sing this sad funeral song: ‘Was there ever such a city as Tyre, now silent at the bottom of the sea?

32In the depth of their despair they'll compose a lament for you. This is what they'll say: 'Who is like Tyre? Who is so silent in the midst of the sea?'

33The merchandise you traded satisfied the desires of many nations. Kings at the ends of the earth were enriched by your trade.

33Your merchandise went out over the oceans to satisfy many nations; with the abundance of your wealth you enriched the kings of the earth.

34Now you are a wrecked ship, broken at the bottom of the sea. All your merchandise and crew have gone down with you.

34"But now it's your time to be wrecked at the bottom of the sea! Your products and your workers have sunk, and so have you!

35All who live along the coastlands are appalled at your terrible fate. Their kings are filled with horror and look on with twisted faces.

35Everyone who lives by the sea is appalled at your destruction. Their leaders are terrified— their faces reflect their fears!

36The merchants among the nations shake their heads at the sight of you, for you have come to a horrible end and will exist no more.’”

36Traders circulate among the people, hissing at you. What a horror you've become! Now you will cease to exist forever and ever!"
