1In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them,

1About this time another large crowd had gathered, and the people ran out of food again. Jesus called his disciples and told them,

2“I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat.

2 “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat.

3And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.”

3 If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way. For some of them have come a long distance.”

4Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?”

4His disciples replied, “How are we supposed to find enough food to feed them out here in the wilderness?”

5He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”

5Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?” “Seven loaves,” they replied.

6So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude.

6So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to his disciples, who distributed the bread to the crowd.

7They also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them.

7A few small fish were found, too, so Jesus also blessed these and told the disciples to distribute them.

8So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments.

9Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away,

9There were about 4,000 men in the crowd that day, and Jesus sent them home after they had eaten.

10Immediately after this, he got into a boat with his disciples and crossed over to the region of Dalmanutha. Pharisees Demand a Miraculous Sign

11Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him.

11When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came and started to argue with him. Testing him, they demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

12But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”

12When he heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why do these people keep demanding a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will not give this generation any such sign.”

13And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side.

13So he got back into the boat and left them, and he crossed to the other side of the lake. Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

14Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat.

14But the disciples had forgotten to bring any food. They had only one loaf of bread with them in the boat.

15Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

15As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.”

16And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”

16At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread.

17But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened?

17Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in?

18Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?

18 ‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?

19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.”

19 When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?” “Twelve,” they said.

20“Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.”

20 “And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?” “Seven,” they said.

21So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?”

21 “Don’t you understand yet?” he asked them. Jesus Heals a Blind Man

22Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him.

22When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him.

23So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything.

23Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?”

24And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.”

24The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.”

25Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly.

25Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.

26Then He sent him away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town.”

26Jesus sent him away, saying, “Don’t go back into the village on your way home.” Peter’s Declaration about Jesus

27Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?”

27Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28So they answered, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

28“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.”

29He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”

29Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah. ”

30Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him.

30But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. Jesus Predicts His Death

31And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

31Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.

32He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

32As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.

33But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

33Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”

34When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

34Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.

35For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.

35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.

36For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?

36 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?

37Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

37 Is anything worth more than your soul?

38For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
