New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, | 1In those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He summoned the disciples and said to them, |
“I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. | 2"I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. |
And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.” | 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a long distance." |
Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?” | 4His disciples answered Him, "Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to fill these people?" |
He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” | 5"How many loaves do you have?" He asked them." Seven," they said. |
So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. | 6Then He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke the loaves, and kept on giving them to His disciples to set before the people. So they served the loaves to the crowd. |
They also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them. | 7They also had a few small fish, and when He had blessed them, He said these were to be served as well. |
So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. | 8They ate and were filled. Then they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces. |
Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away, | 9About 4,000 men were there. He dismissed them |
immediately got into the boat with His disciples, and came to the region of Dalmanutha. | 10and immediately got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. |
Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. | 11The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, demanding of Him a sign from heaven to test Him. |
But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.” | 12But sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does this generation demand a sign? I assure you: No sign will be given to this generation!" |
And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. | 13Then He left them, got on board the boat again, and went to the other side. |
Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. | 14They had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. |
Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” | 15Then He commanded them: "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." |
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.” | 16They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread. |
But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? | 17Aware of this, He said to them, "Why are you discussing that you do not have any bread? Don't you understand or comprehend? Is your heart hardened? |
Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? | 18Do you have eyes, and not see, and do you have ears, and not hear? And do you not remember? |
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” | 19When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?"" Twelve," they told Him. |
“Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.” | 20"When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?"" Seven," they said. |
So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?” | 21And He said to them, "Don't you understand yet?" |
Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. | 22Then they came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to Him and begged Him to touch him. |
So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. | 23He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, "Do you see anything?" |
And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.” | 24He looked up and said, "I see people--they look to me like trees walking." |
Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. | 25Again Jesus placed His hands on the man's eyes, and he saw distinctly. He was cured and could see everything clearly. |
Then He sent him away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town.” | 26Then He sent him home, saying, "Don't even go into the village." |
Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?” | 27Jesus went out with His disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road He asked His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" |
So they answered, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” | 28They answered Him, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets." |
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.” | 29"But you," He asked them again, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered Him, "You are the Messiah!" |
Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him. | 30And He strictly warned them to tell no one about Him. |
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. | 31Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. |
He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. | 32He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. |
But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” | 33But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind Me, Satan, because you're not thinking about God's concerns, but man's!" |
When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. | 34Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, "If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. |
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. | 35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it. |
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? | 36For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his life? |
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? | 37What can a man give in exchange for his life? |
For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” | 38For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." |
