1Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

1Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town.

2Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.

2There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich.

3And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.

3He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd.

4So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.

4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.

5And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”

5When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”

6So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.

6Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy.

7But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

7But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

8Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”

8Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;

9Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham.

10for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Parable of the Ten Servants

11Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately.

11The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.

12Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.

12He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return.

13So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’

13 Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’

14But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’

14 But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’

15“And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

15 “After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were.

16Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’

16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’

17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’

17 “‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’

18And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’

18 “The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’

19Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’

19 “‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’

20“Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief.

20 “But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.

21For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’

21 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’

22And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.

22 “‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant,

23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

23 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’

24“And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’

24 “Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’

25(But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’)

25 “‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’

26‘For I say to you, that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

26 “‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.

27But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”

27 And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’” Jesus’ Triumphant Entry

28When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

28After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples.

29And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples,

29As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead.

30saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here.

30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.

31And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”

31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them.

32So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said.

33But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”

33And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”

34And they said, “The Lord has need of him.”

34And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him.

35So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on.

36And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.

36As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him.

37Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen,

37When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.

38saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

38“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”

39And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”

39But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”

40But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”

40He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,

41But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.

42saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.

43For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side,

43 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side.

44and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you. ” Jesus Clears the Temple

45Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it,

45Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices.

46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”

46He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”

47And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him,

47After that, he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him.

48and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.

48But they could think of nothing, because all the people hung on every word he said.
