New King James Version | Berean Study Bible |
Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. | 1Then Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. |
Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. | 2And there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, who was very wealthy. |
And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. | 3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but could not see over the crowd because he was small in stature. |
So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. | 4So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Him, since Jesus was about to pass that way. |
And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” | 5When Jesus came to that place, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down, for I must stay at your house today.” |
So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. | 6So Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Him joyfully. |
But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” | 7And all who saw this began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinful man!” |
Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” | 8But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will repay it fourfold.” |
And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; | 9Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham. |
for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” | 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” |
Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. | 11While the people were listening to this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God would appear imminently. |
Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. | 12So He said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to lay claim to his kingship and then return. |
So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ | 13Beforehand, he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Conduct business with this until I return,’ he said. |
But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’ | 14But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want this man to rule over us.’ |
“And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. | 15When he returned from procuring his kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each one had earned. |
Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ | 16The first servant came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has produced ten more minas.’ |
And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ | 17His master replied, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ |
And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ | 18The second servant came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’ |
Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’ | 19And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’ |
“Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief. | 20Then another servant came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have laid away in a piece of cloth. |
For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ | 21For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.’ |
And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. | 22His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? |
Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ | 23Why then did you not deposit my money in the bank, and upon my return I could have collected it with interest?’ |
“And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ | 24Then he told those standing by, ‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ |
(But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’) | 25‘Master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ |
‘For I say to you, that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. | 26He replied, ‘I tell you that everyone who has will be given more; but the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. |
But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ” | 27And these enemies of mine who were unwilling for me to rule over them, bring them here and slay them in front of me.’ ” |
When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. | 28After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. |
And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, | 29As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples, |
saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. | 30saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. |
And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ” | 31If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” |
So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them. | 32So those who were sent went out and found it just as Jesus had told them. |
But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?” | 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked, “Why are you untying the colt?” |
And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” | 34“The Lord needs it,” they answered. |
Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. | 35Then they led the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and put Jesus on it. |
And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road. | 36As He rode along, the people spread their cloaks on the road. |
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, | 37And as He approached the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God joyfully in a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen: |
saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” | 38“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” |
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” | 39But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” |
But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” | 40“I tell you,” He answered, “if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out.” |
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, | 41As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it |
saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. | 42and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes. |
For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, | 43For the days will come upon you when your enemies will barricade you and surround you and hem you in on every side. |
and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” | 44They will level you to the ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.” |
Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it, | 45Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling there. |
saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ” | 46He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be a house of prayer.’ But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’ ” |
And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, | 47Jesus was teaching at the temple every day, but the chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people were intent on killing Him. |
and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him. | 48Yet they could not find a way to do so, because all the people hung on His words. |
