I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,1Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς ἐγὼ δέσμιος ἐν Κυρίῳ ἀξίως περιπατῆσαι τῆς κλήσεως ἧς ἐκλήθητε
with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,2μετὰ πάσης ταπεινοφροσύνης καὶ πραΰτητος μετὰ μακροθυμίας ἀνεχόμενοι ἀλλήλων ἐν ἀγάπῃ
endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.3σπουδάζοντες τηρεῖν τὴν ἑνότητα τοῦ Πνεύματος ἐν τῷ συνδέσμῳ τῆς εἰρήνης
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;4ἓν σῶμα καὶ ἓν Πνεῦμα καθὼς καὶ ἐκλήθητε ἐν μιᾷ ἐλπίδι τῆς κλήσεως ὑμῶν
one Lord, one faith, one baptism;5εἷς Κύριος μία πίστις ἓν βάπτισμα
one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.6εἷς Θεὸς καὶ Πατὴρ πάντων ἐπὶ πάντων καὶ διὰ πάντων καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.7Ἑνὶ δὲ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.”8διὸ λέγει Ἀναβὰς εἰς ὕψος ᾐχμαλώτευσεν αἰχμαλωσίαν (καὶ) ἔδωκεν δόματα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
(Now this, “He ascended” —what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?9Τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς
He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)10 καταβὰς αὐτός ἐστιν καὶ ἀναβὰς ὑπεράνω πάντων τῶν οὐρανῶν ἵνα πληρώσῃ τὰ πάντα
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,11Καὶ αὐτὸς ἔδωκεν τοὺς μὲν ἀποστόλους τοὺς δὲ προφήτας τοὺς δὲ εὐαγγελιστάς τοὺς δὲ ποιμένας καὶ διδασκάλους
for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,12πρὸς τὸν καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων εἰς ἔργον διακονίας εἰς οἰκοδομὴν τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;13μέχρι καταντήσωμεν οἱ πάντες εἰς τὴν ἑνότητα τῆς πίστεως καὶ τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς ἄνδρα τέλειον εἰς μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,14ἵνα μηκέτι ὦμεν νήπιοι κλυδωνιζόμενοι καὶ περιφερόμενοι παντὶ ἀνέμῳ τῆς διδασκαλίας ἐν τῇ κυβείᾳ* τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐν πανουργίᾳ πρὸς τὴν μεθοδείαν τῆς πλάνης
but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—15ἀληθεύοντες δὲ ἐν ἀγάπῃ αὐξήσωμεν εἰς αὐτὸν τὰ πάντα ὅς ἐστιν κεφαλή Χριστός
from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.16ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα συναρμολογούμενον καὶ συμβιβαζόμενον διὰ πάσης ἁφῆς τῆς ἐπιχορηγίας κατ’ ἐνέργειαν ἐν μέτρῳ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου μέρους τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ σώματος ποιεῖται εἰς οἰκοδομὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ
This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,17Τοῦτο οὖν λέγω καὶ μαρτύρομαι ἐν Κυρίῳ μηκέτι ὑμᾶς περιπατεῖν καθὼς καὶ τὰ ἔθνη περιπατεῖ ἐν ματαιότητι τοῦ νοὸς αὐτῶν
having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;18ἐσκοτωμένοι τῇ διανοίᾳ ὄντες ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι τῆς ζωῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν ἄγνοιαν τὴν οὖσαν ἐν αὐτοῖς διὰ τὴν πώρωσιν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν
who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.19οἵτινες ἀπηλγηκότες ἑαυτοὺς παρέδωκαν τῇ ἀσελγείᾳ εἰς ἐργασίαν ἀκαθαρσίας πάσης ἐν πλεονεξίᾳ
But you have not so learned Christ,20Ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἐμάθετε τὸν Χριστόν
if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:21εἴ γε αὐτὸν ἠκούσατε καὶ ἐν αὐτῷ ἐδιδάχθητε καθώς ἐστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,22ἀποθέσθαι ὑμᾶς κατὰ τὴν προτέραν ἀναστροφὴν τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν φθειρόμενον κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τῆς ἀπάτης
and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,23ἀνανεοῦσθαι δὲ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ νοὸς ὑμῶν
and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.24καὶ ἐνδύσασθαι τὸν καινὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν κατὰ Θεὸν κτισθέντα ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ὁσιότητι τῆς ἀληθείας
Therefore, putting away lying, “ Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.25Διὸ ἀποθέμενοι τὸ ψεῦδος λαλεῖτε ἀλήθειαν ἕκαστος μετὰ τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐσμὲν ἀλλήλων μέλη
“Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,26Ὀργίζεσθε καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε ἥλιος μὴ ἐπιδυέτω ἐπὶ [τῷ] παροργισμῷ ὑμῶν
nor give place to the devil.27μηδὲ δίδοτε τόπον τῷ διαβόλῳ
Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.28 κλέπτων μηκέτι κλεπτέτω μᾶλλον δὲ κοπιάτω ἐργαζόμενος ταῖς ἰδίαις χερσὶν τὸ ἀγαθόν ἵνα ἔχῃ μεταδιδόναι τῷ χρείαν ἔχοντι
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.29Πᾶς λόγος σαπρὸς ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ὑμῶν μὴ ἐκπορευέσθω ἀλλὰ εἴ τις ἀγαθὸς πρὸς οἰκοδομὴν τῆς χρείας ἵνα δῷ χάριν τοῖς ἀκούουσιν
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.30Καὶ μὴ λυπεῖτε τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ἐσφραγίσθητε εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπολυτρώσεως
Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.31Πᾶσα πικρία καὶ θυμὸς καὶ ὀργὴ καὶ κραυγὴ καὶ βλασφημία ἀρθήτω ἀφ’ ὑμῶν σὺν πάσῃ κακίᾳ
And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.32γίνεσθε δὲ εἰς ἀλλήλους χρηστοί εὔσπλαγχνοι χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς καθὼς καὶ Θεὸς ἐν Χριστῷ ἐχαρίσατο ὑμῖν
