| 1Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. | 1Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him; |
| 2"But not during the festival," they said, "or the people may riot." | 2for they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people." |
| 3While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. | 3While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head. |
| 4Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume? | 4But some were indignantly remarking to one another, "Why has this perfume been wasted? |
| 5It could have been sold for more than a year's wages and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly. | 5"For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they were scolding her. |
| 6"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. | 6But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me. |
| 7The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. | 7"For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. |

| 15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there." | 15"And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there." |
| 16The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. | 16The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. |

| 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." |
| 22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body." | 22While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body." |

| 31But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same. | 31But Peter kept saying insistently, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all were saying the same thing also. |
| 32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." | 32They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed." |
| 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. | 33And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled. |
| 34"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch." | 34And He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch." |
| 35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. | 35And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. |
| 36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." | 36And He was saying, "Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will." |
| 37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Couldn't you keep watch for one hour? | 37And He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? |
| 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." | 38"Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." |

| 41Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. It is enough; the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. |
| 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" | 42"Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!" |
| 43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. | 43Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. |
| 44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." | 44Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away under guard." |
| 45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. | 45After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, "Rabbi!" and kissed Him. |

| 47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. | 47But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. |
| 48"Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? | 48And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? |
| 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." | 49"Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures." |
| 50Then everyone deserted him and fled. | 50And they all left Him and fled. |
| 51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, | 51A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they seized him. |
| 52he fled naked, leaving his garment behind. | 52But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked. |
| 53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. | 53They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together. |
| 54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. | 54Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire. |
| 55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. | 55Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. |
| 56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. | 56For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. |
| 57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: | 57Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, |
| 58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.'" | 58"We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.'" |
| 59Yet even then their testimony did not agree. | 59Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. |
| 60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" | 60The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, "Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?" |
| 61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?" | 61But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" |
| 62"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." | 62And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." |
| 63The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked. | 63Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? |
| 64"You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" They all condemned him as worthy of death. | 64"You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. |
| 65Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him. | 65Some began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, "Prophesy!" And the officers received Him with slaps in the face. |
| 66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. | 66As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came, |
| 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. "You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said. | 67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus the Nazarene." |
| 68But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about," he said, and went out into the entryway. | 68But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he went out onto the porch, and a rooster crowed. |
| 69When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them." | 69The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, "This is one of them!" |
| 70Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean." | 70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean too." |
| 71He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about." | 71But he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you are talking about!" |
| 72Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept. | 72Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And he began to weep. |
