but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.2At dawn He went to the temple complex again, and all the people were coming to Him. He sat down and began to teach them.
The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group3Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center. "
and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.4Teacher," they said to Him, "this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery.
In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"5In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do You say?"
They were using this question as a trap,in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.6They asked this to trap Him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse Him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with His finger.
When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."7When they persisted in questioning Him, He stood up and said to them, "The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her."
Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.8Then He stooped down again and continued writing on the ground.
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.9When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only He was left, with the woman in the center.
Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"10When Jesus stood up, He said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?""
"No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you,"Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."11No one, Lord," she answered. "Neither do I condemn you," said Jesus. "Go, and from now on do not sin anymore."
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."12Then Jesus spoke to them again: "I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life."
The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid."13So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are testifying about Yourself. Your testimony is not valid."
Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.14"Even if I testify about Myself," Jesus replied, "My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going.
You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.15You judge by human standards. I judge no one.
But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.16And if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me judge together.
In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.17Even in your law it is written that the witness of two men is valid.
I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me."18I am the One who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me."
Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."19Then they asked Him, "Where is Your Father?" "You know neither Me nor My Father," Jesus answered. "If you knew Me, you would also know My Father."
He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.20He spoke these words by the treasury, while teaching in the temple complex. But no one seized Him, because His hour had not come.
Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come."21Then He said to them again, "I'm going away; you will look for Me, and you will die in your sin. Where I'm going, you cannot come."
This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?"22So the Jews said again, "He won't kill Himself, will He, since He says, Where I'm going, you cannot come?"
But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.23"You are from below," He told them, "I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins."24Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.""
"Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning," Jesus replied.25Who are You?" they questioned. "Precisely what I've been telling you from the very beginning," Jesus told them.
"I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world."26"I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the One who sent Me is true, and what I have heard from Him--these things I tell the world."
They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.27They did not know He was speaking to them about the Father.
So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.28So Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own. But just as the Father taught Me, I say these things.
The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."29The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him."
Even as he spoke, many believed in him.30As He was saying these things, many believed in Him.
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."32You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.""
They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"33We are descendants of Abraham," they answered Him, "and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can You say, You will become free?"
Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.34Jesus responded, "I assure you: Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.35A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.36Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
I know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.37I know you are descendants of Abraham, but you are trying to kill Me because My word is not welcome among you.
I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father."38I speak what I have seen in the presence of the Father; therefore, you do what you have heard from your father.""
"Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did.39Our father is Abraham!" they replied. "If you were Abraham's children," Jesus told them, "you would do what Abraham did.
As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.40But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this!
You are doing the works of your own father." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself."41You're doing what your father does."" We weren't born of sexual immorality," they said. "We have one Father--God."
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn't come on My own, but He sent Me.
Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.43Why don't you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to My word.
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.44You are of your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liars.
Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!45Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.
Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?46Who among you can convict Me of sin? If I tell the truth, why don't you believe Me?
Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."47The one who is from God listens to God's words. This is why you don't listen, because you are not from God."
The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?"48The Jews responded to Him, "Aren't we right in saying that You're a Samaritan and have a demon?"
"I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.49"I do not have a demon," Jesus answered. "On the contrary, I honor My Father and you dishonor Me.
I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.50I do not seek My glory; the One who seeks it also judges.
Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death."51I assure you: If anyone keeps My word, he will never see death--ever!"
At this they exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.52Then the Jews said, "Now we know You have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death--ever!'
Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?"53Are You greater than our father Abraham who died? Even the prophets died. Who do You pretend to be?"
Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.54"If I glorify Myself," Jesus answered, "My glory is nothing. My Father--you say about Him, He is our God--He is the One who glorifies Me.
Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.55You've never known Him, but I know Him. If I were to say I don't know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.
Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad."56Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see My day; he saw it and rejoiced."
"You are not yet fifty years old," they said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!"57The Jews replied, "You aren't 50 years old yet, and You've seen Abraham?"
"Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"58Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Before Abraham was, I am."
At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.59At that, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple complex.
