| 1Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. | 1Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. |
| 2Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. | 2I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. |
| 3But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. | 3But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. |
| 4Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. | 4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. |
| 5But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. | 5But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is the same as having her head shaved. |
| 6For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. | 6For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. |

| 13Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? | 13Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? |
| 14Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, | 14Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, |

| 16But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. | 16If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God. |
| 17But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. | 17In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. |
| 18For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. | 18In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. |
| 19For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you. | 19No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. |
| 20Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, | 20So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, |
| 21for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk. | 21for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. |
| 22What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you. | 22Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! |
| 23For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; | 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, |
| 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." | 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." |
| 25In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." | 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." |
| 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. | 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. |
| 27Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. | 27So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. |
| 28But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. | 28Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. |
| 29For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. | 29For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. |
| 30For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. | 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. |
| 31But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. | 31But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. |
| 32But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world. | 32Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. |
| 33So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. | 33So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. |
| 34If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come. | 34Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions. |
