New American Standard Bible 1995 | Berean Study Bible |
Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. | 1You are to imitate me, just as I imitate Christ. |
Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. | 2Now I commend you for remembering me in everything and for maintaining the traditions, just as I passed them on to you. |
But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. | 3But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. |
Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. | 4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. |
But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. | 5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is just as if her head were shaved. |
For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. | 6If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. |
For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. | 7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. |
For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; | 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. |
for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake. | 9Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. |
Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. | 10For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels. |
However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. | 11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. |
For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. | 12For just as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. |
Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? | 13Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? |
Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, | 14Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, |
but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. | 15but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. |
But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. | 16If anyone is inclined to dispute this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God. |
But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. | 17In the following instructions I have no praise to offer, because your gatherings do more harm than good. |
For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. | 18First of all, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. |
For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you. | 19And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved. |
Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, | 20Now then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat. |
for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk. | 21For as you eat, each of you goes ahead without sharing his meal. While one remains hungry, another gets drunk. |
What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you. | 22Don’t you have your own homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? No, I will not! |
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; | 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, |
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." | 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” |
In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." | 25In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” |
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. | 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. |
Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. | 27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. |
But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. | 28Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. |
For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. | 29For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. |
For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. | 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. |
But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. | 31Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment. |
But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world. | 32But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. |
So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. | 33So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. |
If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come. | 34If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters. |
