Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, | 1From Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God. |
(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) | 2This gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, |
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; | 3concerning his Son who was a descendant of David with reference to the flesh, |
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: | 4who was appointed the Son-of-God-in-power according to the Holy Spirit by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. |
By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: | 5Through him we have received grace and our apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles on behalf of his name. |
Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: | 6You also are among them, called to belong to Jesus Christ. |
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 7To all those loved by God in Rome, called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! |
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. | 8First of all, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world. |
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; | 9For God, whom I serve in my spirit by preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness that I continually remember you |
Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. | 10and I always ask in my prayers, if perhaps now at last I may succeed in visiting you according to the will of God. |
For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; | 11For I long to see you, so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, |
That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. | 12that is, that we may be mutually comforted by one another's faith, both yours and mine. |
Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. | 13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often intended to come to you (and was prevented until now), so that I may have some fruit even among you, just as I already have among the rest of the Gentiles. |
I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. | 14I am a debtor both to the Greeks and to the barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. |
So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. | 15Thus I am eager also to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome. |
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. | 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. |
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. | 17For the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel from faith to faith, just as it is written, "The righteous by faith will live." |
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; | 18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness, |
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. | 19because what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. |
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: | 20For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse. |
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. | 21For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts and their senseless hearts were darkened. |
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, | 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools |
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. | 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for an image resembling mortal human beings or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles. |
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: | 24Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to dishonor their bodies among themselves. |
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. | 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. |
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: | 26For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged the natural sexual relations for unnatural ones, |
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. | 27and likewise the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed in their passions for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. |
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; | 28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what should not be done. |
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, | 29They are filled with every kind of unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, malice. They are rife with envy, murder, strife, deceit, hostility. They are gossips, |
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, | 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, contrivers of all sorts of evil, disobedient to parents, |
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: | 31senseless, covenant-breakers, heartless, ruthless. |
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. | 32Although they fully know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but also approve of those who practice them. |
