Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, | 1From: Paul, a servant of Jesus the Messiah, called to be an apostle and set apart for God's gospel, |
(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) | 2which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures |
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; | 3regarding his Son. He was a descendant of David with respect to his humanity |
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: | 4and was declared by the resurrection from the dead to be the powerful Son of God according to the spirit of holiness—Jesus the Messiah, our Lord. |
By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: | 5Through him we received grace and a commission as an apostle to bring about faithful obedience among all the gentiles for the sake of his name. |
Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: | 6You, too, are among those who have been called to belong to Jesus the Messiah. |
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 7To: Everyone in Rome, loved by God and called to be holy. May grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, be yours! |
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. | 8First of all, I thank my God through Jesus the Messiah for all of you, because the news about your faith is being reported throughout the world. |
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; | 9For God, whom I serve with my spirit by preaching the gospel about his Son, is my witness how constantly I mention you |
Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. | 10in my prayers at all times, asking that somehow by God's will I may at last succeed in coming to you. |
For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; | 11For I am longing to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong, |
That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. | 12that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. |
Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. | 13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I often planned to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now), so that I might reap a harvest among you, just as I have among the rest of the gentiles. |
I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. | 14Both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to foolish people, I am a debtor. |
So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. | 15That is why I am so eager to proclaim the gospel to you who live in Rome, too. |
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. | 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for the salvation of everyone who believes, of the Jew first and of the Greek as well. |
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. | 17For in the gospel God's righteousness is being revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, "The righteous will live by faith." |
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; | 18For God's wrath is being revealed from heaven against all the ungodliness and wickedness of those who in their wickedness suppress the truth. |
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. | 19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God himself has made it plain to them. |
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: | 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible attributes—his eternal power and divine nature—have been understood and observed by what he made, so that people are without excuse. |
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. | 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. Instead, their thoughts turned to worthless things, and their senseless hearts were darkened. |
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, | 22Though claiming to be wise, they became fools |
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. | 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images that looked like mortal human beings, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles. |
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: | 24For this reason, God delivered them to sexual impurity as they followed the lusts of their hearts and dishonored their bodies with one another. |
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. | 25They exchanged God's truth for a lie and worshipped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. |
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: | 26For this reason, God delivered them to degrading passions as their females exchanged their natural sexual function for one that is unnatural. |
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. | 27In the same way, their males also abandoned their natural sexual function toward females and burned with lust toward one another. Males committed indecent acts with males, and received within themselves the appropriate penalty for their perversion. |
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; | 28Furthermore, because they did not think it worthwhile to keep knowing God fully, God delivered them to degraded minds to perform acts that should not be done. |
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, | 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, quarreling, deceit, and viciousness. They are gossips, |
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, | 30slanderers, God-haters, haughty, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to their parents, |
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: | 31foolish, faithless, heartless, and ruthless. |
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. | 32Although they know God's just requirement—that those who practice such things deserve to die—they not only do these things but even applaud others who practice them. |
