Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.1Jesus, however, went to the Mount of Olives.
And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.2At daybreak he appeared again in the Temple, and all the people came to him. So he sat down and began to teach them.
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,3But the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. After setting her before them,
They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.4they told him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery.
Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?5Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women to death. What do you say?"
This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.6They said this to test him, so that they might have a charge against him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.7When they persisted in questioning him, he straightened up and told them, "Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."
And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.8Then he bent down again and continued writing on the ground.
And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.9When they heard this, they went away one by one, beginning with the oldest, and he was left alone with the woman standing there.
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?10Then Jesus stood up and asked her, "Dear lady, where are your accusers? Hasn't anyone condemned you?"
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.11"No one, sir," she replied. Then Jesus said, "I don't condemn you, either. Go home, and from now on don't sin anymore."
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.12Later on, Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.13The Pharisees told him, "You're testifying about yourself. Your testimony isn't valid."
Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.14Jesus answered them, "Even though I'm testifying about myself, my testimony is valid because I know where I've come from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going.
Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.15You're judging by human standards, but I'm not judging anyone.
And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.16Yet even if I should judge, my judgment would be valid, because it is not I alone who judges, but I and the one who sent me.
It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.17In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two people is valid.
I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.18I'm testifying about myself, and the Father who sent me is testifying about me."
Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.19Then they asked him, "Where is this Father of yours?" Jesus replied, "You don't know me or my Father. If you had known me, you would've known my Father, too."
These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.20He spoke these words in the treasury, while he was teaching in the Temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.21Later on, he told them again, "I'm going away, and you'll look for me, but you will die in your sin. You cannot come where I'm going."
Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.22So the Jewish leaders were asking, "He isn't going to kill himself, is he? Is that why he said, 'You cannot come where I'm going'?"
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.23He told them, "You are from below, I'm from above. You are of this world, but I'm not of this world.
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.24That is why I told you that you will die in your sins, for unless you believe that I AM, you'll die in your sins."
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.25Then they asked him, "Who are you?" Jesus told them, "What have I been telling you all along?
I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.26I have much to say about you and to condemn you for. But the one who sent me is truthful, and what I've heard from him I declare to the world."
They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.27They didn't realize that he was talking to them about the Father.
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.28So Jesus told them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own authority. Instead, I speak only what the Father has taught me.
And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.29Moreover, the one who sent me is with me. He has never left me alone, because I always do what pleases him."
As he spake these words, many believed on him.30While he was saying these things, many believed in him.
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;31So Jesus told those Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are really my disciples.
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.32And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?33They replied to him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves to anybody. So how can you say, 'You will be set free'?"
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.34Jesus answered them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.35The slave does not remain in the household forever, but the son does remain forever.
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!"
I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.37"I know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are trying to kill me because you've not received what I've told you.
I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.38I declare what I've seen in my Father's presence, and you're doing what you've heard from your father."
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.39They replied to him, "Our father is Abraham!" Jesus told them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing what Abraham did.
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.40But now you're trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham would'nt have done that.
Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.41You are doing your father's actions." They told him, "We're not illegitimate children. We have one Father, God himself."
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.42Jesus told them, "If God were your Father, you would've loved me, because I came from God and am here. I haven't come on my own accord, but he sent me.
Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.43Why don't you understand what I've said? It's because you can't listen to my words.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.44You belong to your father the devil, and you want to carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and has never stood for truth, since there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.45But it is because I speak the truth that you don't believe me.
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?46Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I'm telling the truth, why don't you believe me?
He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.47The one who belongs to God listens to the words of God. The reason you don't listen is because you don't belong to God."
Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?48The Jewish leaders replied to him, "Surely we're right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon, aren't we?"
Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.49Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon. On the contrary, I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.50I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it, and he is the Judge.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.51Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."
Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.52Then the Jewish leaders told him, "Now we really know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, but you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.'
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?53You aren't greater than our father Abraham, who died, are you? The prophets also died. Who are you making yourself out to be?"
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:54Jesus answered, "If I were trying to glorify myself, my glory would mean nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.'
Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.55You don't know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I don't know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him and keep his word.
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day, and he saw it and was glad."
Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?57Then the Jewish leaders asked him, "You are not even 50 years old, yet you have seen Abraham?"
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.58Jesus told them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, before there was an Abraham, I AM!"
Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.59At this, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the Temple.
