Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, since he is good, for his gracious love exists forever. | 1Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever. |
Who can fully describe the mighty acts of the LORD or proclaim all his praises? | 2Who can describe the mighty acts of the LORD or fully proclaim His praise? |
How happy are those who enforce justice, who live righteously all the time. | 3Blessed are those who uphold justice, who practice righteousness at all times. |
Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people. Visit us with your deliverance, | 4Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor to Your people; visit me with Your salvation, |
to witness the prosperity of your chosen ones, to rejoice in your nation's joy, to glory in your inheritance. | 5that I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, and rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, and give glory with Your inheritance. |
We have sinned, along with our ancestors; we have committed iniquity and wickedness. | 6We have sinned like our fathers; we have done wrong and acted wickedly. |
In Egypt, our ancestors neither comprehended your awesome deeds nor remembered your abundant gracious love. Instead, they rebelled beside the sea, the Reed Sea. | 7Our fathers in Egypt did not grasp Your wonders or remember Your abundant kindness; but they rebelled by the sea, there at the Red Sea. |
He delivered for the sake of his name, to make his power known. | 8Yet He saved them for the sake of His name, to make His power known. |
He shouted at the Reed Sea and it dried up; and led them through the sea as though through a desert. | 9He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; He led them through the depths as through a desert. |
He delivered them from the power of their foe; redeeming them from the power of their enemy. | 10He saved them from the hand that hated them; He redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. |
The water overwhelmed their enemies, so that not one of them survived. | 11The waters covered their foes; not one of them remained. |
Then they believed his word and sung his praise. | 12Then they believed His promises and sang His praise. |
But they quickly forgot his deeds and did not wait for his counsel. | 13Yet they soon forgot His works and failed to wait for His counsel. |
They were overwhelmed with craving in the wilderness, so God tested them in the wasteland. | 14They craved intensely in the wilderness and tested God in the desert. |
God granted them their request, but sent leanness into their lives. | 15So He granted their request, but sent a wasting disease upon them. |
They were envious of Moses in the camp, and of Aaron, the holy one of the LORD. | 16In the camp they envied Moses, as well as Aaron, the holy one of the LORD. |
The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, closing over Abiram's clan. | 17The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it covered the assembly of Abiram. |
Then a fire burned among their company, a flame that set the wicked ablaze. | 18Then fire blazed through their company; flames consumed the wicked. |
They fashioned a calf at Horeb and worshipped a carved image. | 19At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped a molten image. |
They exchanged their glory with the image of a grass-eating bull. | 20They exchanged their Glory for the image of a grass-eating ox. |
They forgot God their Savior, who performed great things in Egypt— | 21They forgot God their Savior, who did great things in Egypt, |
awesome deeds in the land of Ham, astonishing deeds at the Reed Sea. | 22wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. |
He would have destroyed them but for Moses, his chosen one, who stood in the breach before him to avert his destructive wrath. | 23So He said He would destroy them—had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach to divert His wrath from destroying them. |
They rejected the desirable land, and they didn't trust his promise. | 24They despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His promise. |
They murmured in their tents, and didn't listen to the voice of the LORD. | 25They grumbled in their tents and did not listen to the voice of the LORD. |
So he swore an oath concerning them— that he would cause them to die in the wilderness, | 26So He raised His hand and swore to cast them down in the wilderness, |
to cause their children to perish among the nations and be scattered among many lands. | 27to disperse their offspring among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands. |
For they adopted the worship of Baal Peor and ate sacrifices offered to the dead. | 28They yoked themselves to Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods. |
They had provoked anger by their deeds, so that a plague broke out against them. | 29So they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them. |
But Phinehas intervened and prayed so that the plague was restrained. | 30But Phinehas stood and intervened, and the plague was restrained. |
And it was credited to him as a righteous act, from generation to generation—to eternity. | 31It was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come. |
They provoked wrath at the waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered on account of them. | 32At the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them. |
For they rebelled against him, so that he spoke thoughtlessly with his lips. | 33For they rebelled against His Spirit, and Moses spoke rashly with his lips. |
They never destroyed the people, as the LORD had commanded them. | 34They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them, |
Instead, they mingled among the nations and learned their ways. | 35but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. |
They worshipped their idols, and this became a trap for them. | 36They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them. |
They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons. | 37They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. |
They shed innocent blood— the blood of their sons and daughters— whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, thereby polluting the land with blood. | 38They shed innocent blood—the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood. |
Therefore, they became unclean because of what they did; they have acted like whores by their evil deeds. | 39They defiled themselves by their actions and prostituted themselves by their deeds. |
The LORD's anger burned against his people, so that he despised his own inheritance. | 40So the anger of the LORD burned against His people, and He abhorred His own inheritance. |
He turned them over to domination by nations where those who hated them ruled over them. | 41He delivered them into the hand of the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them. |
Their enemies oppressed them, so that they were humiliated by their power. | 42Their enemies oppressed them, and subdued them under their hand. |
He delivered them many times, but they demonstrated rebellion by their evil plans; therefore they sunk deep in their sins. | 43Many times He rescued them, but they were bent on rebellion and sank down in their iniquity. |
Yet when he saw their distress and heard their cries for help, | 44Nevertheless He heard their cry; He took note of their distress. |
he remembered his covenant with them, and so relented according to the greatness of his gracious love. | 45And He remembered His covenant with them, and relented by the abundance of His loving devotion. |
He caused all their captors to show compassion toward them. | 46He made them objects of compassion to all who held them captive. |
Deliver us, LORD our God, gather us from among the nations so we may praise your holy name and rejoice in praising you. | 47Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to Your holy name, that we may glory in Your praise. |
Blessed are you, LORD God of Israel, from eternity to eternity; Let all the people say, "Amen!" Hallelujah! | 48Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, “Amen!” Hallelujah! |
